I was shocked when I upgraded my EV:O and found that my warships couldn't load up on bow armament as well as turrets, but it does actually make sense. Warships tend to be long, thin things. They can't mount a whole lot of forward weaponry.
The sad thing is that warships' turrets are all effective in all directions - on a wet navy battleship, the crew seek to deliver a broadside for maximum effect, preferably while the opponent is unable to do the same. In EV/EV:O there are no such tactics. A ship is just as likely to get hit regardless of its orientation, only size is a factor. sigh
Still, it's hard to adapt to the new system. I fly a lowly corvette in EV, and it's got at least seven guns!
Remember - turrets weigh a lot but they feature two or three barrels. It's better to use your gun slots for turrets, if you can stand the weight. Of course, it's harder to deliver a decent 'Python, because your gunfire doesn't come from the edge of your sprite, but it's still possible in most cases.
