    • Behold! An EV/O Guide for Everyone! Read it!

I have just released "Captain Canardley Ableson's Technical Guide to the EV/O Universe" on the EV/O add-ons page!!!!!

The file is called "TechFolder", because the name was too long-winded for a decent title. But download it, please!!!

It will be worth your time!

Basically, it is a technical manual on what makes spaceships move and weapons fire. I worked long and hard on the info and the title graphic. Please give me your opinion on both. Write here or at el_guapo_7@yahoo.com.

      Thanks!

      Viva El Guapo

    • Nice, but I suggest using a black background as the pictures on a white background just makes it look naff, you could also use graphics for the headers on each page e.g. Phase Cannon in big glowing letters.

    • That's an interesting idea, CSB. Hmmmm...maybe version 2?

BTW, how 'bout the tech stuff?

Well, DL and read it, Shadow...you'll be #68.

And yes, I am STUNNED at the response (I mean, it was put up on Sept 1!)

    • (This is a repost from the EV3 board...)

I am rather disappointed by this guide. The explanations seem artificial, and the science is vague at best. For example, why are lasers slower than neutrons? Or how can you ionize neutrons? Also, some descriptions give a false impression of a weapon. Miranu defense pods and Zidagar phased beams are obscenely underrated, for example. A Zidara and its two fighters can melt down a Lazira in no time at all.

Now you might say: Well, then why don't you make a better tech guide, huh? As a matter of fact, I'm considering it. I have very little free time to spend right now due to my first pre-diploma exam beginning in 20 days, but seeing as such a guide wouldn't take more than a paragraph per weapon, I might do it anyway.

      (/repost)

In fact, I started work on the very same night. The first few paragraphs are up at (url="http://"http://www2.active.ch/~christi1/techguide")www2.active.ch/~christi1/techguide(/url) . There's more coming up. In my humble opinion the tech explanation makes more sense. I welcome any input, corrections, suggestions, remarks, flames etc.

Just wondering whether the stuff in the guide has any scientific basis or whether you just made it up?

Cinga, nice job, looking forward to when it's complete, interesting to compare the two.....

    • Cinga: Way to go, by all means do your best. If you do it better, wonderful! I've said on the EV3 board that I appreciate the credit you give me for the template. And great work with adding the graphics. (My guide is DocMaker, I felt that too many graphics would make the guide too large and unacceptably lengthen DL time. The descriptions are excellent, though from a different point of view. Captain Ableson speaks as a retired captain telling it anecdotally. You speak as an engineer - more technical.

CSB: The blaze cannon is based on a basic laser. As for the shields and hyperdrive, your guess is as good as mine. I'm not a Stafleet engineer, but what I wrote seemed to make sense in a logical way. I mean, there don't seem to be any such things as warp fields and dilithium, but Roddenberry and Coon and Justman (60's Star Trek producers) sure made it sound believable. This was my goal. Did I do an OK job?

BTW, did anyone like the intro graphic or the signature?

(And zhouj, glad you liked it.)

    • The signature was pretty awful to be honest. Did you do it in a graphics program?

Glad you see it that way. My guide was never meant to replace or downplay yours -- it's just supposed to provide a different point of view. The reason why I use HTML rather than the spiffy DocMaker docs is because I have no idea how to make them... on the other hand, I can use Netscaper Composer. πŸ˜‰

The guns & turrets section is more or less finished now, by the way. Unguided secondaries coming up next... someday...

Exactly. That's why neutrons shouldn't travel faster than laser.

It can withstand phase turret fire and dispy rockets for a while. My point was that the phase disruption beam was very powerful compared to those "regular" weapons and therefore shouldn't be downplayed.

No, actually, I signed with a mouse. And yes, I knew it was bad. I put it in for the lol effect rather than any other real reason.

(Besides, autographed stuff IS supposed to be valuable!

'scuse me, but doesn't the blaze cannon fire faster than neutron cannons? Or am I just stoopid?

BTW, the DocMaker program is a little hard to get used to, but once I figured out how, it went OK. (I mean, the parts you don't like aren't the fault of the program, now, are they?)

True. But you still have to explain why phase weapons travel nearly twice as fast as laser...

    • I like both guides (especially the finished one).

      ------------------

    • I believe that, because the Blaze Turret description describes "a core physical component of the blaze burst," the blaze burst is not actually a laser pulse. (Laser light is energy, and not usually considered 'physical.') ElGuapo7, you might want to revise the blaze cannon section in your guide.

The guide is very interesting, however, overall.

      (This is just my opinion.)

I got no problem with opinions, UE. And nothing is ever really finished. I'll probably revise this guide a few times, based on what I'm getting in my mailbox.

πŸ˜•Your question, however, takes us to the age-old problem of the photon duality - is it a wave, or a particle, or both? Physicists from all over the world have pondered this seemingly impossible quandary since before 1900, when Max Planck published his fascinating work on black-body radiation.

They don't know if a particle is a wave or a particle.
And I was just looking for something that made sense and looked good. πŸ™‚

(I mean, show me an impulse drive, UE!)

      LOL
