I managed to whack one of those gentlemen (being loose with language today, quite obviously ) and ran for my life (with an eye in my pouch). My quest is to kill all of the Cyklops. Is there some counter that keep tracks of the number I have killed or will I have to kill that one once again?

not a counter per se (there are ten in all) and you don't have to kill that one again. you will know when you kill the last one, as you will find a key then...

My stratagy here was to go in and kill the wasps at the top of the screen, lure one cyclops in take his eye and then go back for the loot from the old man (a couple of potions I think) and then go back for the rest with my added powers. Clear out the wasps again and lure the cyclops up to the wasp free area one at a time...
