    • EV Pilot's Challenge - II

Okay everybody, it's time to test your mettle and compare your abilities in Standard EV to those of other pilots'. (Are you excited yet?)

Announcing ... The Second EV Pilot's Challenge

Start Date & Time: June 1, 2002, 00:00 ASW Time (The time on each of your board postings)

      End Date & Time: June 14, 2002 22:00 (10:00 pm) ASW Time

This is an "Honor System" contest. (We're not sending in our Pilot files or anything. If you cheat, you only cheat yourself.) Start your new pilot on STRICT play anytime after the start time above. Use no Forklift, plug-ins, or cheats. Time your new pilot for two (2) hours with an alarm or stopwatch (Remember that alarm feature you never use from your cell phone?) Enter as many pilot results as you wish in the two week period. Post your results BEFORE the Ending Time, above. (No late postings will count in the rankings.)

(In no particular order) your pilot will be rated based on...

      1. Cash
      2. Value of ship
      3. Number of Escape pods used (or number of new pilots started cuz you refused the pod).
      4. Missions done.
      5. Ranking for their government
      6. Number of dominated planets.
      7. Combat rating.

Winners will be in 5 catagorys -- Trader, Pirate, Reb, Fed, Independent. Traders will be moved to "Independent" if they have over a "Noteworthy" combat rating.

Rewards? You get bragging rights on the Board. (What? You were expecting prize money???)

(Over a year ago cable_guy cleaned up(!) in such a contest. And, just so you know, I (KK) went through 10 -- Yes, ten! -- Escape Pods before I got cocky and careless and gave up in frustration. Know this ... if you are not accustomed to Strict Play, you're in for a treat. ;))

Sign up here and let us know who's playing:

    • I'll probably have a go if I get the time... isn't this contest more of a test of amount of free time than skill though? I could dominate Sol, but I'd rather not spend 18 hours on it.

Well ... "Yes." This is (partly) why I made it only a two week contest. The first one was a month -- almost half the participants had completed the Alien mission and dominated several systems of the galaxy. (Ahem.... And then there were a few like me. We kept landing our escape pods and starting over with the Shuttle ... and another ... and another ...)

    • Honestly, I think that's just a little bit too much time for a contest like this. It would be much easier to rank players if the contest was only 1 hour long. There would be more diversification and a more accurate protrayal of true skill. By the 14th day marker, everyone will be flying around in a decked out cruiser with nothing else to do but stack up cash. It's all going to be determined by who has the quickest money-making methods.

With the (Significantly) shorter timeframe, people's different preferences and abilities will show through a little bit more (AKA: More flavor).

Next, security. There's no way to truely secure a "contest" like this. You could require a snapshot of the pilot file info screen be taken just before E-Mailing the results. Clip that on and you'd have a creation date and modification date (Both of which we know are easily modifiable.) The honor system would have to do. Finally, this would give people multiple chances to try out different techniques for a quick-paced start. Think of how many 1-Hour games somebody could go through between now and the 14th. Finally, this would give those of us who work full time in addition to going to school full time a chance. It wouldn't just boil down to who has more free time.

How people break up the hour (all in one strike, 5 minutes a day, etc...) would be entirely up to them. If they want to play every hour, every day for two weeks and submit 336 pilots, they're both insane and, most likely, the living dead but would be possible.

Finally, this method would allow for a variable submission method. People would send in submissions as they completed them. (Use of a stopwatch would be HIGHLY recomended. You don't want to go over on your playing time)

      Any comments or ideas?

    • I think that AJ's modifactions with the time is good. Between the first and fourteenth, play for an hour, and then use the rest of KK's rules. If we do that, I'm signed up.

Nova Legacy: The Roughnecks, the first in the Legacy series of plugs for EV Nova. Coming soon!

    • Okay, the rules have been updated to (somewhat) reflect AJ's and Jimbob's posts. The contest is a two (2) hour contest. You time yourself. You may enter as many results in the two weeks as you complete.

(Hope you guys like the compromise. If not -- do your own contest.)

    • Sweet. 2 hours sounds great. I'm in.

Thanks alot for the modification. It's a great idea but... we're all just too damned good to be playing a strict-play game for 2 weeks 😃

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to try to remember the quickest way to make money.

    • Ok, I'm in. I think that the 2 hour rule is a bit messed, but oh well.

    • I have been persuaded.... A shorter time limit is a good thing. (Heck! I'm working two jobs myself these days.) It balances out the "Skill" -vs- "Time To Spend" issue.

Next time I might make a three (3) hour contest, but I'll probably not do a week / two week / month contest again.

Remember, you can submit as many results -- in as many categories -- as you can complete.
      The categories again ...
      Trader
      Pirate

      Confederation
      Independent/Mercenary

(Move your "Trader" pilot to "Independent" if s/he has over a "Noteworthy" combat rating.)

You have a few days to finish whatever plug-in you're playing with now. But please clean out the plug-ins, forklifts, cheats and ResEdit/EVedit modifications you have made ... then start tearin' it up!

      What!?? "Lightning jump?" What's that.

(KK stumbles into the corner muttering something about having played EV for almost three years ... and never knowing about some cool trick/device/____.)

It's a plug-in that makes hyperjumps extremely fast.

Sorry, no. If it is not "standard EV" it is "out". Otherwise your ratings would skew the results compared to the rest of us...
