    • Something Weird...

I guess I should have asked about this earlier. Whenever I play PoG, my DSL connection goes screwy; whenever I try to connect after playing, the mac tells me it "could not maintain an ethernet session", or something along those lines. It takes me two hours to fix the problem, and I can't fix it the same way twice. Does anyone know what's going on, and how I can fix it?

I'm running PoG on MacOS 8.6, and my computer is an original iMac DV with 320 MB of RAM. I play PoG with an extension set with everything I normally have on, except File Sharing ( though it was happening with File Sharig on too), and VM off.

    • Two hours a pop? Sounds like a minor inconvenience to escape into the world of PoG for a while...

I'm running OS 8.6 on an old PM 7500 with 176MB RAM and VM on/off without any problems with my ethernet connection. I've even read my mail with PoG in the background.

What are some of the things you've had to do in order to fix the problem? I would look to your extensions. I run wih a minimal set of Apple-supplied + PGP + Virex + Stuffit. I would look to anything that may be trying to maintain some sort of open session and would be sensitive to timeouts -- do you have some sort of VPN connection?

Do you have multiple machines on a local LAN? An ethernet session would be related to your LAN or Mac to DSL modem connection rather than an Internet connection (unless your ISP uses PPPoE for the connection, I suppose).

      Got any more information?

      Cheers 😄

I'm running a DSL conection over ethernet with MacPoET. And what the heck is a VPN connection, and what do you mean by "PGP" ?

Yes. an iMac DV hooked up to a 7200.

    • Does anyone have anything that could help me?
By the way, the error message is
"could not establish or maintain a PPP over ethernet session.
      Negotiation failed."
I get the message every time I try to connect to the internet using MacPoET.

    • I now believe that this is a problem with PoG. Something about the way it's written, or what it does, causes problems with MacPoET (my PPP program) and Microsoft Outlook Express, even when those two programs aren't running.
      My ISP is Earthlink.
This isn't just a minor setback, either. The iMac is a family computer, and my parents run an internet business that relies on being able to connect. Playing PoG just isn't worth the trouble of fixing the problems it causes. If no one can help me, at least tell me how I can send a bug report to Ambrosia, please.

    • A VPN (virtual private network) session is kind of similar to your PPPoE session except that its encrypted. PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) is a public key encryption program that you can download from (url="http://"http://www.pgp.com/products/freeware/default.asp")http://www.pgp.com/p...are/default.asp(/url) if you're interested.

Pure speculation, but I think that the PPPoE session is timing out and doesn't reset for about two hours. There is a DoS (denial of service) defense mechanism built in to the protocol, but it acts more like a timeout is passing than anything else.

I would suggest you start your Mac with MacPoET disabled, play PoG, then enable it and reboot when you're done. Maybe someone else who is using DSL/MacPoET combination can provide more guidance?

      Cheers 😄

    • Actually, it takes about two hours to FIX the problemŃto get it to connect again. I usually have to use Norton SystemWorks or something similar.

    • I wanted to add to my last message, but I don't know how to do it so that anyone would see there's somethig new.
Actually, DagdaMore, the problem happens even when MacPoET and Outlook Express aren't running , so it would depend on whether you mean't to simply quit the programs, which wouldn't work, or to turn off all the corresponding extensions, which I haven't tried (I don't want to have to fix it again).

    • I would disable the MacPoET-related extensions. Other than that, I can't think of anything... Sorry :frown:

      ------------------

    • I disabled every extension I didn't need... I've turned off everything internet-related, including MacPoET and Outlook, and not only does it work, it also makes PoG run much faster than before! 😄

    • I was wrong. It took awhile but the problem has started again. If no one can help me, I would ask ASW to fix this bug in their next update. :frown:

      Hello-
Sorry for not responding sooner. I can tell you this is the only report I've had of this, though that is no consolation to you I'm sure.

I'm forwarding a report to the developer today including this issue. If there is anything else you have to add, let me know at help@AmbrosiaSW.com.

    • I already have. I'm Paul G. It has been awhile since I started this thread, and I've collected some new info, so you might not have recognized them as the same.
