    • Trouble Running EV 1.05

Help! I just downloaded Escape Velocity version 1.05, installed it, and tried running it. My screen changes colors several times and I get a message box which says: "Sorry, EV needs at least 130K of memory to run in this resolution. Please increase its memory allocation and try again". I have a brand new imac running OS X 10.2 with 768K memory. Since I'm very new to the mac world, I have no clue on how to fix this and get the game running.

Can anyone help guide me through this?

      Thanks in advance.

      ------------------

    • Note: I don't have OSX- this is what works on OS9.

Click the "Escape Velocity" icon >once<. Go to "Get info" under "File." Go to "Memory." Raise the memory. Try EV again. If it still doesn't work, then maybe EV can't run on OSX- I wouldn't know. Try playing it under OS9. Good luck.

Welcome to the boards and the Mac community! 🙂

    • I'm pretty sure your procedure is the one used under OSX Luke, although I may be wrong. By the way, rockinghorse, not too much memory is required but later on you will need more if you want to use any plugs. And welcome to the boards! 😉

    • Luke, Phantom: thanks for the quick replies to my question. Your advice was exactly right--I changed the memory under the File/Get info area and the game ran like a charm.

I really appreciate the help and the friendly welcome from both of you.

      Thanks again.

You're quite welcome, but it was mostly Luke. 😉

    • I've never had any success running EV through OS X. Most of the sounds are delayed by a few seconds, the color saturation is bad, and the sprites sometimes pitch a fit...

I've yet to play EV under X, so all I can suggest is that you wait for the port of EV to EVN, then you'll be able to play under X without any glitches.

By the way, welcome to the boards, rockinghorse.

    • You still running OS 9, EVula? I kinda wish I had stayed with it myself - OS X has brought on a lot more trouble for me, but much of that can be blamed on my computer hardware. I currently prefer my OS 9 iMac over my OS X G4.

In addition to EV's problems under OS X, all the graphics are very grainy.

    • The grainy-ness comes from playing on modern technology 🙂
On my first computer I played on, an LC475 with a 13" Apple-monitor showing 256 colours, I never noticed. Compared to that configuration, I'm spoiled by my Apple's 17" CRT-monitor with ADC-connector that shows millions of colours. It's way too crisp for a game like EV, I can see basicaly every bad pixel. From the grey spots on the Shipyard icons to the dithering of every planet picture...

BTW, I'm running EV in OS X Classic mode and except from the volume controls and the overly crisp graphics, it works great. It's odd others are having problems.

I've got a PowerBook that is running X, while my tower runs under 9 still.

Also, what's with the new name?

Ah, a PowerBook? Sweet. Did you get the Titanium model (shut me up as soon as I go too far off topic :p)? My older bro got one of those about two months ago (superdrive model) and I've been very, very impressed. He also got a Radeon 9000 put in it... cranked 120fps out of Reign of Chaos.

"Captain Skyblade" was due for retirement, I believe. The name was getting a reputation as a "crazy idiot with too many posts." I kinda got tired of all that bull, so I'm happy with a new title and a clean post count.

I finally updated my website a few days ago (first time since fall of last year, I believe). I'm sure you were probably wondering if I would ever touch Dreamwave again. 😉 It's good to be hangin' around again doing some of my older tasks (especially 3D graphics - I might be getting a good job in that area soon). Since my absence I've also become a QuakeWorld player thanks to a former member of this webboard who convinced me to give it a try. I suck right now, but it's fun. 😛

Hey, good to "see" you around. Its been awhile.

I've got an older 667 model (DVI, not VGA). I got it refurbished for a great price, and I've been using it in college to take notes. It rocks. 🙂

shrug I just can't see myself doing that, but that's primarily because I've never changed screen names (ever; EVula is the first one that I started using, and I use it everywhere).

I picked up a powerbook a couple of weeks ago as well. Does that 100 on the front mean it's 100 percent powerful? It must be good because you have to reset it 20 times before the hard drive starts working, kinda like warming up the engine in a really powerful car. And that screen! I can get black AND white pixels. Talk about cutting edge. And heavier batteries are better right? That means they last longer. What does Lead-Acid mean?

By the way, I like the change in name, Skyblade. You're correct in your crazy-too-many-posts assumption. However, that name also holds alot of respect. When you have as many posts as you did, alot of people are going to know who you are. Here's to another 9800+ posts, Kyle Katarn.

    • Haha AJ. Sounds like you've had fun with defective PowerBooks. 😛

One cool feature I like on the PowerBook (and never knew about) is when you remove the battery while the computer is booted, the system gives you one minute to insert another power source, whether that be another battery or a cable. Cool enough, the computer automatically stores that minute of juice and makes battery switching very easy.

I still use "Skyblade" just about anywhere else, namely GameRanger and Hyperiums. I just changed the name here because of its history. 😉 Yeah, I liked having "superhero" instead of "member," but what the heck... I'm just another member like anyone else. I'm content as I am. Heh.

You gonna put your money on an extra 9800? Cheers. 😄

Lucky. I pull the battery out of mine while it's on and I'll be lucky if it ever boots up again. Update: I picked up a 145 and a 170, neither working. I pulled the greyscale screen off the 145 and Stuck it on the faster 170 along with RAM from another derelict ancient laptop computer. Final verdict? I've got the world's coolest frankenstein paperweight capable of running Microsoft Word 5.0 or Photoshop 1.0.7. Wheeeee! I can make icons! Still can't run EV though...

As for another 9800 posts... well let's just say you should stick it out for another week this time and break 10K. If you get to 5000 again, I'll consider throwing some money down. =P

I just think it'll be funny when, a month from now, you'll have compiled more posts in 2 months than I have in 3 years.

You, my friend, are in desperate need of modern technology. 😛 I thought my iMac 350mhz was bad... Heh.

I intend on sticking with this username, so no surprise if I beat your bet. I reached 1000 posts under Captain Skyblade my first month as a registered user, but I do not intend on breaking this record with my new account. 😉

I do a lot more 3D modeling now than I used to, thus the 3D Gallery is the main reason I started sticking around again. I'll likely start posting more work over there soon.

      Cheers. 😄
