    • Beefing up ships

When you guys get a new ship (like a Rebel Cruiser or a Kestrel), do you usually take the weapons that come with it and use them, change a few of the outfits, or replace virtually everything?
I usually sell all my secondary weapons and load the ship with proton turrets.

Heh heh heh. So do I. But I also add all the engine tweaks, and occasionally some torps or missiles or some other secondary. I also fill all the cannon slots, but I usually use the longer ranged laser cannons.

    • Normally, I change a few things on the ship. Most of the time I get rid of the missiles and torpedoes or heavy rockets, and then max out on turrets and guns and then I get the engine, thrust, turning upgrades (which are a must in my case). From there I get an afterburner and ramscoop, and go out to some place like Spica and buy the shield upgrades and tritanium armor to go in with my armaplast and durasteel. Then I can destroy any ship/ships that approach me.

I basically do the same thing but I don't get the afterburners.

    • With Cruisers, I get all of the essentials (armor, shield upgrades, fuel pods, scoop, afterburner, engine upgrades, and one or two expansions) then I buy lots o' proton and bombs. Mostly proton.

    • Yeah, I almost never use secondary weapons except for neutron cannons.

      Javelin rockets > neutron cannons.

Yeah, sure. But you have to replace javelin rockets every now and then (not to mention you have to get a javelin pod), but neutron cannons are energy weapons and don't need to be replaced. In the long run, it saves money.

    • I have to agree with Blackdog on that. Smaller, cheaper (okay, maybe not), more effective, not to mention much longer range. Javelins are very good primary backups.

    • Well, just take down a few clippers and covettes and you will get plenty of javelin and soon overpass the 1000 units limit.
I usually take the torpedoes for long range approach then get into close combat phase with full laser and two javelin pods.

    • I believe the javelins limit is 999, as it only holds three digits of numbers. I found that the shield capacitors do not help at all, as each adds 1.5 to shields(15 is shipyard, divide by ten). I'm pretty sure the tritanium, however adds about 40 armor! That does come in handy. If you are in a fighter, then the shield booster helps tremendously. In a warship the booster doesn't help much.

I noticed that. Before, I got a lot of capacitors and a shield booster, but they just didn't seem to work.

You get what you pay for. How much space do 4 neutron blasters take up? 140 tons?

    • I haven't been using Javelins much at all, but they're sounding more and more interesting.

Neutron cannons would have been great, if they were about 10 tons lighter and had twice the range. Right now they're just a waste of space.

I always go for speed and then firepower. The afterburner is a must for me, with or without the other speed boosts. The reason for this is that not only can it propell your ship faster, but it has an enormous acceleration. Without it I wouldn't be able to get out of certain tight spots. A short burst with the afterburner can make your ship reverse course in a split second. It's really fun confusing the AI or it's missiles that way.

      Here's a funny thing: System 7.5.2

    • Javelin rockets are pretty cool. If I max them out they almost last for three battles. Their range is slightly farther than that of a laser cannon, and their launch speed is quite a bit greater. If you equip two launchers(ten tons total) they launch almost simultaneously. I'm not sure how many launchers you can have, but three or four would probably make it almost one long string of rockets. The damage they produce is the main draw back, as it isn't much more than cannons

    • You can hold a max of two javelin pods and buy a max of 999. However when you board ships like the corvettes and clippers, you can take their javelins and outpast the purchase limit. You could even make money by buying a pod and then sell all the javelins stolen, but you have to click many times. Thats why I usually buy a hundred and then plunder.

The neutron canons are nice, but so heavy to get a proper rate of damage, like Blackdog said.

    • I think the shield capacitors only adding 1.5 to shields is a bug. At least, I hope it is, since I changed the ones in my copy to add 15 points. 😄

I think its already 15 when you look at it w/ Resedit, it just automatically divides by 10 when you're in the game.
