Corvette, all the way. Big enough to take on almost any other ship, with decent weaponry and manouverability (sp?), but not so big that it takes 3 days to jump from system to system.
BTW, why the vote for the Hawk? How can you fly one without a plugin or modifying the data files?

OctoberFost is on the right track, but I would definitely take the Lightning over the Rapier. Either way, you are fast enough to fool turrets and you have enough forward cannons to slowly slice your opponent to shreds. Only Confed Cruisers get away, because they won't stay and fight, but lumber stupidly off the map instead.

Set your game speed to 100%, this will fix the Confed cruiser bug of not turning.

i've only been playing pale lately, so my opinions are heavily affected by the changes in pale. but here goes, anyways.
Rebel Destroyer is good, but since it is rebel (no perticle beam!) it's not as good as a 'fed' frigate. Kestrel is good too, but it only has about half the shields of a confed frigate. The only drawback of the frigate is it's slooow acceleration (the turning is actually reasonably good with all upgrades) but it gives the impression of my ship being really massive. For escorts rebel escort carriers are excellent! but overall, the frigate is something you can propably board after a battle (a rebel destroyer and a few fighters should do the job, or two destroyers) early on in the game.
But none of this matters. i declare the scoutship as my fav. ship in the game, as it costs less than 100kcr and i use it til i get a REAL warship, in other words, after i get 3Mcr+

Confed cruiser: Too slow but powerful weapons
Rebel cruiser: Good enough
Rebel destroyer: Nah
Rapier: The BEST fighter
Kestrel: Perfect if you want to be a pirate 
Bulk Freighter: It sucks so why bother?
Corvette: Top-notch defensive and pirate ship
Hawk: Good for defence, but only two hawks! Get outta here!

I just started playing EV. I've been playing EVO for ages, but I never got around to the original until a few days ago. Now that I finally finished the game, I've got to say... Rebel Cruiser!

Kestrel for me. Can't count the number of times I've kicked but with that ship. Better than a frigate but not as good as a rebel cruser, I'll take this one anyday.
