    • Help, please!

      Hi!

First of all; I know that this is an EV-webboard, for Macintosh. And I am one of the sinful PC-users, but I have a Macintosh, so I am not entirely a lost soul!

I have a major problem, and I need major help. I have three computers; PC#1 (the one with ADSL-connection - but no sound and WinNT), PC#2 (the one with CD-RW and sound, but no internet access - Win98) and my Macintosh (a PowerMacintosh 6100/66 - no internet access). I have recently discovered that plugins might be nice to play (as I get tribute from all planets (except for Sol and Centauri)). Hence I went to download a plugin. There I was, whisteling a merry little tune and having tea and biscuits, when I realized that I wouldn't be able to move 4.08 MB on a floppy. But I splitted the file and transfered it to PC#2, by using which I burnt the 4.08 MB on a 650 MB CD-R disc (waste of space). When I, in the Macintosh, try to unStuff the downloaded archive, I cannot unStuff more than once - thus that I do not get the plugin-files.
My question is; what should I do to make the plugin playable on my Macintosh?

I have tried Basilisk, but it was so darn slow on my slow computer... :frown:

A source told me that Soviet Mikee could be of assisstance! 🙂

P.S. This is kind of EV-related, for answering this question would make it possible for me to play EV-plugins! 😉 D.S.

    • Only thing I can think of is to check what version of StuffIt you're using, it may be too old. Which Mac OS are you running?

How am I supposed to get StuffIt-expander to my Macintosh? I have thought about that, but I haven't got any furthur than to realizing that it would most probably not work, to transfer via CD-R, juding after my previous attempts with similiar operations.

The Macintosh has MacOS 7.6.1, but I've tried updating, which doesn't seems to work all to well... :frown:

    • Go to Apple.com and download the program. Put it on a disk - maybe the one you have the Plug-Ins in - then put it in your computer. This may work, but no guarantees. Heck, disks are cheap enough, so you aren't losing much.

I could - maybe - mail you a copy through Postal Mail of a disk with it. I have a burner, so maybe if I used a Mac burner it would transfer Mac files better. That doesn't make any sense, but it's worth a try.

Tell me how the first idea works.

(edit) Maybe you could send the Plug-Ins to me, I can unstuff them, then shove them off to you in .zip format. Sound good? (/edit)

    • It looks like the first hint will work, but here's an alternative. You could zip-it (I have 1.4 right now) and zip the file into multiple pieces. You can set segment size in the program and then zip-it will make archives that are very close to the size you specified. I moved Footsteps of Pyrrhus to my computer on a 1.44 meg floppy in this way.

    • if all esle fails, buy a couple of cheap network cards(or maybe you could find some for free, we did) and run a wire between your computers.

Every time I went to a wedding, my aunts used to poke me and say "you're next!", but they stopped when I started doing it to them at funerals.

The first idea is currently being done - the CD is on fire (burning)! (information)I am the master of lame jokes(/information)

Indeed. Discs are very cheap... I bought 10 650 CD-Rs for 80 SEK (which is about $8). 🙂

Hey, that second thing sounds really nice. Though it would include about two or three days of waiting, as I belive you live in the US - and I am living Sweden. But thank you anyway! 🙂
And I am impressed that some people still remember what physical mail is. (informatio)See above.(/information)

That edit of yours was a kind thought, but what is there to it? Can Macintosh handle .zip-files? 😮

      --- time passes by ---
It didn't work, burning StuffIt 6.0 on a CD. I cannot unStuff the .sit-file. :frown:

    • Oh yeah, .zip files work great on Macs (I have one). I use zip-it 1.4. Works great! Then you don't even have spend 80 cents on a CD.

Thanks, I have bookmarked that page, and as soon as I get the time to, I'll try to get a hold of a good emulator.
