    • PoG...So nice...

<sigh>...I hate to be as big a dork as I am in #EV3, but I must...
Andrew probably doesn't want me to talk too much about the game itself, so I'll
leave it at the fact that the game is incredibly kick-ass, no butt-kissing intended or used. Pillars of Garendall is simply a great, Ambrosia, game.
And so I make my first post the the boards. When it's released, I'm sure I'll be answering lots of scenario help questions. <dejected sigh>, ah well, it's so HARD being a beta tester...so hard... Heh, maybe I'll have something better to do with my time soon.

Well, here is a testimonial. 😛

Is it better than the MacNN preview makes it look?

Nope, all indications seem to be that EVN will be the last of Ambrosia's projects currently in the works to hit beta.

Sorry, you had to watch Seinfeld to get the humor in that.

    • The EVN beta was hand-picked, and (to some extent) so were the Coldstone and PoG betas. It's a matter of being in the right place at the right time, being interested, and being helpful to others.

    • True that! Being on the beta is a very special, intensive deal.
Just not paying attention, or being someone andrew doesn't think can handle it, whatever,
etc. can make you miss the beta.
Plus, the fact that beta testing is very demanding, you may not like the way it really is when you finally DO do it...
So don't always get your hopes up,

    • yeah, but we do get vacation time. how long have we been on this coffee break now? two weeks? three weeks? oh well. it's comming all in good time, and in good taste. though I wasn't impressed with PoG at first, I certainly am now. it moves in leaps and bounds...

macnn didn't really do the game justice -- they seemed to speak of things they didn't yet fully comprehend. (should have gotten a beta tester to write their article...) There were a whole bunch of exagerations of features in that article; but PoG is definetely more than what macnn described it as.

    • Yes, it's very good to be excited about a product, but nothing can spoil a game more than unmerited praise. It makes it seem like kissing up. I know that's not what was going on, but you can at least wait until a release before you sell your vintage arcade collection.

    • It's nice to be hearing good things about the Pillars of Garendall gameplay. I was not impressed to see PoG in the abbreviated logo, and the quality of the writing on the betashots and preambles pages, well...

it should be kept in mind that PoG was/is being developed by Beenox, a Canadian based company. most of the people working on the project speak French as their first language, and so the first-draft translations you've seen aren't what you're going to be reading in the final product.

    • Concerning beta-testing, the more I think about it, the less I think I want beta-test games. Yeah, so you get to see the game before it is out. But you can't tell anyone about it. And you probably won't be able to buy some of the items that you need. And it probably crashes a lot. And you have to spend so much time playing and reporting, even though you might keeping having system crashes or memory problems. And then, when the game is finally finished, it won't be as fun because you've already done everything except you didn't get to do it when the game was in finished form...

      Oh, well

If only they had testers for the final candidates...

It will be released this year.

    • But when you test a game, and you give the author feedback about a certain aspect of the game, the author listens, and he might change things because of you. Then when game is released, and people are raving about how cool it is, and how they've spent the last two weeks of their lives playing it, and it's kept them from doing their homework and they absolutely love it - you can point to the game and say "Look - I helped make that game the way it is. I was part of it". It's a great feeling.

Helpful hint: while beta-testing don't go on a one-week or longer vacation. If you do, andrew will surely release the next version while you are gone, and you'll come back to find your e-mail host complaining about how you have 400+ messages waiting for you. 🙂

I actually recieved an email saying I was chosen for the Coldstone beta-test, but I chose not to participate for three reasons: school (which I already didn't have enough time for), lack of broadband, and I was scared that I might not measure up to the job.
