    • Amusing note of the day

PoG's official release date is exactly two years after Cythera.

    • Hm... and it's the second Ambrosia fantasy RPG. :Ź)

I happen to think this is not just a coincidence, however. Eh, andrew?

    • Was that intentional, or just concidence? (hopefull POG will be better than Cythera; it was way to short :frown:)

      Nevertheless, I did like Cythera.

    • I unfortunately will be playing cythera tonight while everyone else is playing the demo or full version of POG. I only have MacOS 8.6.

Maybe I can talk my roommate into letting me play it on her new iBook she just ordered: it should get here in about 2 weeks.

If you are playing POG right now, I am jealous. But, have fun and I am sure I will be sharing stories about POG with ya down the road.

Thanks for POG Ambrosia. I cant wait.

PoG will actually run on OS 8.6 -- just install CarbonLib and give it a go!

    • Hmm, the PoG page (http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/games/pog/) says: "Mac: PowerPC Only, OS 9 or OS X" You should change it, if PoG actually runs on 8.6.

Since I didn't know off the top of my head what CarbonLib was, I did a quick lookup on
it, to save others who might similarly not know what it was. You can find CarbonLib
on Apple's support page, and is a 2.1MB download for OS 8.6 and above. http://www.info.appl.../downloads.html

I would assume that the reason why they don't lower the system requirements for the game is because you have to update/add to OS 8.6 in order to play the game. If they included the lower operating system, they would be flooded by people emailing complaints saying they downloaded the game and it won't run. It is fairly common practice around the industry to list minimum system requirements of "stock" packages. I would recommend, however, that a FAQ be done, and one of the questions listed be, "I have OS 8.6 and want to play. Can I?" And then list the CarbonLib update on Apple's web page.

      ------------------

Well, now all that is left for me is to get off work, download the carbonlib update for my OS 8.6 equipped mac, and then download the game. Woo hoo!

    • I actually uses Mac OS 8.5.1 and plays PoG with success. Install CarbonLib as Andrew suggests and go ahead!

      Confusion reigns. Please advice.

    • That gave me quite a scare, I'm glad it will run on 8.6. Which reminds me, I should probably try to get a bigger hard drive, some RAM, and of course OS X. 🙂

Believe it or not, it is entirely by coincidence. Pretty amazing, though.

    • Just to beat a little drum here....

Anybody interested in running new software, including games, over the next year or so ought to be running at least MacOS 8.6. This is because most new software is going to be for the Carbon suite of API's, not the classic Mac Toolbox. (Read: something very fundamental changed about the way programs are written. The old rules no longer apply!) 8.6 is the minimum configuration that will support CarbonLib, something that you need in order to run a program written for Carbon.

It is recommended that you keep your copy of CarbonLib up to date.

    • well, I already had carbon lib installed for other games so that should not be a problem. I too was relying upon the "minimum operating standards" that was listed on the site I downloaded from which said MacOS 9.

But, downloading the demo was the problem. After 3 tries, 1 got all the way done and it wouldn't open, the second one got to 20 mb, and the third got to 25mb before it stopped downloading. I decided to give up on downloading the demo, and will order the CD instead. After wasting 4 hours (minimum) I was very frustrated to say the least.

    • Sorry about that, Nelly -- the mad rush of a product release can sometimes result in being trampled by the hoards who are trying to get it, too.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I think I'll do just that when I make up the FAQs for PoG!

Neily, are you using Internet Explorer? Because I had this problem, and figured out a way to fix it (eventually!). You need a copy of ResEdit and Stuffit Expander 6 to do this. First, create a small disk image with Disk Copy. Next, open the image and also the PoG demo image in ResEdit. Get File/Folder info on both of them, and then change the creator and file types of the PoG image to those of the other image. The original file type for my IE file was "bzy9", the creator is "MSIE". These need to be changed to a type of "dimg", and creator "ddsk" respectively.

Once these are changed, if you try Disk Copy again, it still won't be able to mount it (Error -8816, bad file type 🙂 ) it. However, Stuffit Expander can mount disk images, and it worked without a hitch! Simply copy the game to you hard disk, and have fun!

On a side note, this might even work for a netscape file.🤷. I haven't tried it, but it may still work, if you used Netscape.

      Hope that helps you 🙂

"Any good that I may do here, let me do now, for I may not pass this way again"

    • I think I had actually successfully downloaded the demo the first time. But, I never knew that I should move it from the desk top to the hard drive. I read that later on the Ambrosia download site (in my anxiousness I neglected to read the directions). So, when it wouldn't open I trashed it thinking it was corrupted (AOL never does a good job downloading). Well, then I tried 2 more times and got a case of net lag that stopped my download.

Anyway, if I do try to download again, I should move the file to my hard drive first??? I guess I never have really ran into this before so I have no clue as to why. I am definitely not familiar with ResEdit, I have heard of it before used it a couple of times (for icons) but that is about all. Should I have to use this? When I tried to open the file, it said "the program that created it not found." Will the hard drive thing work? And, if so, can someone please explain to me how I am supposed to know when to do this, and when not to. I have had this same error pop up after other downloads, but it happens so infrequently that I always attributed it to a corrupted file. I feel so out of the loop now when it comes to computers, I used to think I was pretty good with them.

Anyway, if anyone would be interested in explaining this to me, feel free to email me at imacian@aol.com

      ------------------

    • The reason why dragging the file from the desktop to the hard drive works has something to do with how the finder handles new files. While the file is being downloaded, programs like IE and iCab assign a special file type to the file to visually show about how much of the file is downloaded. Unfortunately, the Finder doesn't always keep up with it. Therefore, when the file is done downloading, it still appears as an IE or iCab document. Dragging the file to the hard disk itself (or any folder, for that matter, even the trash can will work) forces the finder to update the info on every file in every open window. Therefore, the file should regain the proper icon, and should be handled properly when double clicked upon.

Only 6 MB to go on my 5th try! My fingers are crossed!
