    • Guess I'm one of the old farts, age-wise, here. Maybe that's why I don't post much, I have homework. Oh, wait, sorry, that was my senior year in high school. Depending on the college, kiddies, it can be a joke. I wish it wasn't, more work is much more normal-feeling for me. Boredom sets it, and I start hanging out here. j/k ๐Ÿ™‚

On a more serious topic, I'm finding the religion discussion very interesting. I am by denomination a Congregationalist, a Prostestant derivative, but my beliefs are a very loose system base dupon what I believe is right. For example, I do not believe I must go to church or go to hell. I turn to God when I am in need, but do not necessarily comminuate with Him on a regular basis. I accept all religion, except when it is attempted to be forced upon me (an old girlfriend tried this, no dice, I like me as I am). The thing I find disturbing about the Taliban is that it forces religion upon others, which I find sad. Religion is about spirituality, but also, in my opinion, individuality and solidarity simultaneously. Any nonhostile responses welcome.

So, does that mean you're a moral relativist? I don't believe you HAVE to go to church either. Just a good way to grow. And you don't HAVE to go to hell as long as you believe the right stuff. About only turning to God when in need, that kind of makes God you own personal get out of jail free card, doesn't it? Do you try to get a personal relationship with Him? You accept all religion? Do you believe that any of them are wrong? And define more closely what you mean by forcing. Are you talking about trying to convert you, or saying do this or we'll kill you?

Ahh...good. You're not one of those super-strict Christians. For me, there's no good church in the area. There's just no point in going to a church if they speak nothing but lies. Not that the churches I know are like that, but they're pretty darn close. Nothing personal against the people who say you aren't Christian if you don't go to church every Sunday, but that just can't be. Not if you're in a situation like mine.

That is, I guess, one of my main points. In my opinion, no two people are ever in the same situation. I find religion interesting, but necessarily perfectly appicable to me as a person. For example, I went to a scientology church, just to hear some of their ideas. It was very interesting, even while I don't necessarily, for lack of a better term, "buy into it," it's very cool to listen to many different philosophies.

I feel remotely flamed here. Always been very careful, so this wouldn't happen, but I knew I'd take some flak for that post. So:

      • Elaborate on moral relativist.

      • One of my friends was told that if he knows he has to go to church, as required by his religion, and doesn't, then it is a sin. Basically, it means ignorance is not necessarily a sin, but negligence is. I was going on my own experince on saying I didn't believe I had to attend church.

      • I do not have a personal relationship with Him. I resent your remark about using God as a get out of jail free card, I am not trying to make it easier for myself to get into Heaven; I don't believe in that (Heaven). I do, however, believe that sometimes I need a spiritual pillar, someone of whom I can ask questions and get no response or reaction, but just feeling better that I told somebody.

      • By forcing, I mean trying to convert someone with the idea that they already do not want to be converted. This would also mean threatening bodly harm or worse if they do not change.

Maybe that is belittling the God you believe in, and flame me all you want for it, but this is the belief system I base my life in. That is something that has always frustrated me: the belief that your religion is the one true religion, and all others should convert. I think the world is great the way it is, with all these different ideas and philosophies and teachings. One could spend the rest of their life and get nowhere near to learning about all the different religions. I accept the fact that there is not, and never should be, any singularity on Earth when it comes to religion.

Almost...you've got half of it right. There's no sense in believing in a religion, then saying that it's not the only true religion. That allows for way too many loopholes. What I think, personally, is that every is entitled to their own ideas. I can tell them mine, sure, and argue several reasons why their religion is a load of bunk and could never exist at all, but I wouldn't hold it against the person if they didn't believe in what I had to say.

Welll, that's pretty much all I'm looking for, is acceptance in my non-religion of sorts. More often than not, however, that is not the case. People don't tend to give up very easily when they seem to sense that you may be open to their ideas and, through that, their religion. even if I become a crazy old hermit who decides to worship the moss on the ground because it is so soft and such an important part of the forest ecosystem, I would still like to think I can find acceptance for that. ๐Ÿ™‚

Really sorry I kind of flamed you. I'll try not to do it again.

A moral relitivist is someone who believs there is no such thing as right and wrong.

I believe that if you can go to a good church, then go. I also believe that if you try to go to church, but can't sometimes, that's okay too. And you say going to church is required by his religion? What religion is he? Most denominations of Christianity say it's a good idea to go to church, but they don't say it's a sin not to. One last thing on this subject. If the only church you have access to is a bad church which teaches things you know aren't true, then I think it's a better idea not to go than to go.

Sorry I said it like that. Your last post cleared this up for me. I thought you just talked to God so he could give you stuff. You actually talk to God, and not just ask him for stuff. I don't believe that you talking to God gets you into heaven. Only believing in Jesus does that. Sorry again.

I believe that you should try to spread your religion, but never threaten bodily harm. Try to be gentle. I am now. Try to talk to them even if they don't want to hear it, but don't keep forcing it. After they say no once in that day, back off. Try again the next day. Eventually they might want to know what it is you're so passionate about.

Christianity is a very stubborn religion. It believes that it is the only religion. John 14:6 says, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." If you believe in the Bible unconditionally, then that one verse shuts out all other religions from being true. There will never be one true religion on earth, but we should try to increase heaven's population as much as we can.
