Well, the Rebel Destroyer and Manta are actually somewhat better than their Confed counterparts, though only a little. The Rebel Cruiser is definitely inferior in AI vs. AI, though better for human control. I believe David's theory, which makes sense (doesn't all of David's posts make sense?), is that the Confed ships are slower and more heavily armed because they are intended to defend the Core Worlds, while Rebel ships are faster because they were originally designed to carry out hit and run attacks, where speed is necessary. Sorry if it wasn't you who said that David, but I seem to recall you posting something to that effect.
