    • For Those Having Problems Downloading The EV Plug-in EMPIRE OF CRIME...

It has come to my attention both over the weboard and private email that some individuals have been experiencing difficulties in regard to downloading my new EV plug-in EMPIRE OF CRIME, with the most common problem apparently being "Type -39" error messages.

A recent email I received from webboard member "Defender" may present a solution. Sometimes Netscape Navigator will download a screen full of random text characters; should this happen, save the downloaded file to your hard drive and open it with Stuffit Expander. Apparently this trick worked.

If this does not help, I can only suggest the following:

      (1) I have noticed that the people having this download problem APPEAR to be using high-speed cable modems. If you are using such a device, you might want to contact your ISP/cable provider and see if there is a software bug or extensions conflict that may be causing you grief.

      (2) EMPIRE OF CRIME was compressed into a self-extracting archive using version 5.5 of Aladdin Systems' DropStuff. You might want to contact the company at info@aladdinsys.com and see if there is a conflict between whatever version of browser/MacOS you are using any any of Aladdin's products that would cause such errors to appear.

I am sorry I cannot be of more assistance. If there is anyone on this webboard who has a solution, please contact me at the email below or post your solution here for the benfit of others. It would be most appreciated, and I thank anyone who can help in advance.

      Kindest Regards,

      Tim

    • Tim: I notice that "Empire of Crime" is saved as a self-extracting archive (.sea), but has not yet been encoded. This may be the reason that Netscape tries to break down the plug into ASCII instead of actually downloading it. It may also be the reason for the -39 error message, usually a sign of file corruption. Here are notes on encoding, actually Step Three from the official plug-in submission instructions:

      Quote

Use MacBinary or HQX encoding on your files before submitting them

After you've compressed your files as outlined above, please encode them using a program like MacBinary or BinHex (StuffIt and other products can also HQX-encode files) before you submit them. This will allow others to download and decompress your files more easily and reduce the risk of the archives being corrupted in transit. MacBinary-encoded files should be suffixed with .bin, HQX-encoded files should be suffixed with .hqx.

Give it a try. Good luck.

If all goes well a "repaired" version of the plug-in will replace the current hyperlinked one in the near future. I am currently waiting to hear from one of the website administrators regarding this and will post a general message to the webboard when the problem has been taken care of.

In the meantime, my SINCERE apologies to those players who have been having problems with the downloading of this plug. The current ".sea" format should be encoded to either ".bin" or ".hqx" in the near future.

      Kindest Regards,

      Tim

    • just drag the sea onto stuffit expander (or open it with stuffit expander) it'll work then

    • This is Nicholas, possibly the first person ever to complain about downloading problems with EoC.
I'm still trying to find out what kind of modem I use,but I thought I might continue this ongoing discussion here, where it might benefit the native populace of the EV webboard.

    • I encountered this problem too. I solved it by changing its file type in ResEdit to that of a Stuffit Document. This worked fine, and I would suggest that it be tried by other people to avoid having to go through lots of aggravation.

    • Though as Tim said in another topic here, the problem with EoC is solved now and the plug can be downloaded from his site without a hitch. I've tried it myself, and it's perfectly true. 🙂

    • I'm having a different problem. When I download it and unstuff it I get this error: The resourse fork EOC graphics is corrupted. Please use caution when using this file. It's som'n like that anyway. Is this Error Type 39?
