And the Scoutship's armor isn't a problem if you invest 5 tons for armaplast. And while it does still suck against true Capital ships, I can still easily take out a Corvette, which is a light Capital ship. I see no reason to buy anything between it and the Corvette.

I would purchase a scoutship over a corvette if my choices were narrowed down to those two. I haven't flown a corvette in forever...

    • I find that choice interesting. The only thing a Scoutship has over a Corvette is slightly higher manuverability, and not accel. or speed. I do agree that the Scoutship is probably the best civilian ship(except maybe the Rapier) lower than the Corvette. If they cost the same, would you still go scout?

If they were both the same price, only then would my choice be a toss-up. It would depend on the missions I'd be doing...

    • If I may ask, what do you find more attractive about the Scout over Corvette? I really like scoutships still, I just like Corvettes more.

I can't answer that one very well, even if I ask myself the same question. ๐Ÿ™‚ The corvette and I have never really clicked...To me, you either buy something very light and fast, like a Rapier (and if upgraded, the Rebel Destroyer. It flies like a heavy fighter). Or if you want, then go on to something heavy and deadly, like a Rebel Cruiser. Anything in between, like the corvette, just doesn't fit my taste.

    • Hmm, I could note here that the only difference in maneuverability between the Corvette and Destroyer is a slight bonus in Acceleration for the Destroyer... same speed and turning.
I've always liked the in-between ships, because they're still quite maneuverable and can pack a lot of punch. In EV, they're a best of both worlds, it seems to me they have the advantages of both, rather than the disadvantages of both.
BTW, I consider the Rebel Destroyer an in-between ship. ๐Ÿ™‚

The Rebel Destroyer an in-between ship? I don't think so...It flies like a heavy fighter, but has the firepower and shielding of any other captial vessel. The Rebel Destroyer is a far better ship then the corvette could ever be, carrying over twice the shielding, firepower, agility and speed to get the job done.

      Dear Macavenger,

With all due respect ... that's wacko!

My new pilots suffer through the early/mid phase of EV, just "holding on" until they can pilot their 'Vettes. These pilots all -- every one, I've checked -- experience paroxysmal joy when, on completion of the Alien string, they can purchase and pilot the ultimate EV fighting ship ... their own Rebel Destroyer. (These same pilots eschew the Rebel Cruiser. None of them gets nearly the thrill derived from the Destroyer....)

"No way!" are the 'Vette and the Destroyer close in performance. (End of diatribe.)

    • There seems to have been a misunderstanding here, which I shall now try to correct.

I was not attempting to say that the Corvette and Rebel Destroyer are similar in performance. I was trying to say that their maneuverability is comparable. This was to point out to Skyblade that he really shouldn't be hating the Corvette if he likes the Destroyer. Nor was I attempting to belittle the Destroyer. I call it in-between because it has the higher manuverability of fighters and the good punch of medium capital ships.

But just because the Rebel Destroyer and Corvette are both "in-between" ships doesn't mean I should like the Corvette. ๐Ÿ˜‰ And I normally call the Rebel Destroyer a heavy capital ship, since it can easilly take on Confederation frigates, which obviously are heavy vessels.

    • I haven't been able to finish the Alien missions without a Forklift, let alone in a corvette! Personally, I use a lightning that has been hollowed out of every weapon except the lasers in case I need to disable and board something. Then I get all the shield and armor upgrades she can carry, then I top it off with a Forklift. Kestrels are too big and slow.

Why, you've ruined the game! :)...Using such weapons as the forklift before you've completed all the major missions in the game is quite a spoiler.

Using the forklift period spoils the game. I never use it, even for fun, and I've beaten the game for both governments several times over.

    • I enjoy Clippers as escorts. They (when I have 5 of them) hold a goodly amount of cargo, so I can whack those pirate Argosies and plunder their cargo.

Whenever I'm under attack, the Clippers hold REEAL still, and don't get attacked. So my cargo isn't at risk.

I have to beat off those dumb Defenders that chase me, but that's fine with me. I get SO scared of them... ๐Ÿ˜›

I tried argosies as escorts for a while, but the following pirates increased in number, and the argosies themselves moved in for the attack, spoiling the point.

I Had Just Learned About Boarding Ships Because I Got My Copy Of EV Off Of A MAC ADDICT And It Doesn't Give You Instructions On How To Play. I Had To Learn All On My Own. Anyway, I Saw A Confed Gunboat Flying Around In The Tiber System. And Since You Know How Often Ships Don't Go Into That System, I Thought It Upon Myself To Improve My Combat Skills A Little. I Disabled It And Boarded It To See What I Could Take. I Captured The Ship As My Own And Had The Corvette As My Escort. Next Thing I Know, My Mission Was To Engage The Alien Cruiser. When I Finally Found It, My Escorts Kept The Fighters Busy While I Went After The Cruiser. I Didn't Know About The Fusion Beam In The Front And Being The Pilot I Am, I Went Head On With Him. Oops. Unfortunatly For Me, I Had It On Strict Play. That's All She Wrote.

The number of pirates that follow you depends on the total cargo capacity of your fleet. 5 Clippers hold about as much as one Argosy, so that's not much in terms of pirate bait. If you have many Argosies of course you get more and deadlier pirates - 2 Lightnings and 2 Rapiers was mentioned as the max somewhere. You can tell your escorts to stop moving with V or whichever key you defined for "hold position". This stops them from moving and firing. Very handy when you have fighter escorts who just disabled a pirate and you want to plunder the ship instead of having it blow up. Also very handy when you don't want the freighters to fire on the pirates and draw their attention - you want the pirates coming after you so that you can escape or kill them, not going after and killing your escorts.

You can abuse the pirates to make money if you have a Kestrel, since you can capture and sell the Lightnings you disable. You need to sell your existing Lightnings first, of course. Just hire enough freighters to attract Lightnings, and you're good to go at 1M a captured Lightning. Plus your combat rating goes up and the host system likes you more as you kill off the non-Lightning pirates.
