Geez! You guys are all my heroes.
I thought -- since I'd only done the mission in Kestrels -- I would be "stretching" myself to see if a 'Vette would work. But a Scout Ship??? A Clipper???? A Shuttlecraft?????
(KK totters down the dank narrow hall of the Velociteer's Old Folks' Home, mumbling something about being 'out of his league....')
(wheeze, moan, sigh....)

You will find that our crew will be either the most valuable, loyal, and trustworthy of allies, or ... if you insist on trying to swallow us up -- the worst of enemies. The choice is yours. And should you choose to fight us ... dont bring a knife to a gunfight!
How to kill the Cruiser with a mere shuttlecraft:
Yes, it can be done without cheats. Forklifts are for the weak. It is certainly possible....I've done it about 6 times.
Its been awhile, but I remember what I did. Arm your shuttle with the max # of javelin launchers (you have to launch them as fast as possible, DON'T settle for just one or something), and buy 999 javelin rockets. Yes that's right, weak javelins. They are weak compared to everything else, but the high firing rate is what will matter. Trust me. If you have room for anything else, more power to you. It is concievable to use a mass expansion to gain a bit more weapon space. speed upgrades, since they take up no space, may help, but are not necessary. A shield booster to help with regeneration isn't necessarily a bad idea either.
So now, go meet up with the Cruiser. Don't approach it head on, but try to do it from the side. When you do, hold down these keys:
-The auto-pilot key
-the secondary key, with javelins firing
-the left or right arrow key (I held down left)
If you've done it right, you'll be circling the Alien Cruiser in such a way that you continue to fly around him pummeling it with javelin rockets non-stop. The reason it works it that you'll be circling him at a good pace, and at the same time the Cruiser's turning ability isn't great. Thanks in part to the dumb AI, the Alien Cruiser always turns to line up its front with your ship precisely, then blasts you with its heavy fusion beam. However with this manuver the Cruiser can't do this, and will do little more than keep turning in an effort to line up the perfect shot. Since you are hitting it with javelins non-stop, his shield regeneration won't help him much because you'll be inflicting damage continuously. If you are persistent and relentless, you'll take him down. Be forewarned that the Alien Fighters will likely go after you unless you are fortunate enough to have other ships take them on, but their fusion beams will do minimal damage. Most of the time, due to the rate at which you are circling the Cruiser, at best they'll deal you glancing blows which your shields will recover from in no time. This is especially true with the shield booster equipped.
In simple terms, that's how its done. Sometimes things will mess up and you will be shot by the heavy fusion beam....if that happens, don't panic. If you have a good amount of shielding you won't die, but will rather be knocked back a ways from the impact. If that happens keep moving to avoid the alien fighters, wait for your shielding to come back up some, then go at the Cruiser again. Again, persistence is key!
Killing the Alien Cruiser is also possible with other small ships. I've done it with the following ships:
Shuttlecraft (as explained above)
Scoutship
Courier
Clipper
Lightning
Rapier
Corvette
Kestrel
As you get to the bigger ships, it usually gets a lot easier because you can add primary weapons to the firepower of the javelins. The Courier and Scoutship, for example, are unremarkable like the shuttle, but they have more space to play with. Its insanely easy with the lightning, because of the speed and the fact that you can use the fast firing laser cannons as well as the maxed out javelins. The Rapier is a little harder due to how slow it is, but its nothing after doing it in a shuttlecraft. The above technique is usually a walk in the park with ships like the Corvette and Kestrel.
I have not tried it in an Argosy, but I'm sure its possible.
Really, it can be done in nearly any ship if you're good, believe it or not.
Actually, there are exceptions. The Luxury Liner and Bulk Freighter would be extreme challenges because they are as slow as mud. The defender's shielding is too weak to sustain any real damage, and lacks the space to even mount the javelins necessary. Aside from those 3 though, I imagine its possible with about anything.
So...that's how its done. I wish luck to any of those out there brave enough to try out my advice with the "minor" ships of EV.

I like using the 'vette for the alian mission. The clipper was too boring, the 'vette has better speed and power. The kestrel is a little harder than the 'vette, since it is much slower. KK, you must not be an experienced fighter pilot (no offense), I prefer warships to fighters (I consider the 'vette a warship).

If you're bored with killing the Alien in a small ship (I've done it it a Lightning) , try doing it in large ships. I've done it in a Rebel Destroyer, a Rebel Cruiser, a Confed. Frigate, and a Confed. Cruiser. Of course, the challenge here is capturing the large ships. I like to do the Rebel missions in a Rebel Destroyer (my favorite ship in plain vanilla EV). Once I get a Corvette, I go to the Perseus system and start trying to disable Reb. Destrovers. If you do not blow up the disabled destroyer after an unsuccessful capture attempt, the Rebs don't seem to get overly offended. If so inclined, when I finally succeed in capturing a Destroyer, I clone it, and use the clone to capture one of the other ships.

Did somebody here mention beating the alien mission in a shuttlecraft? No offense, but that is downright impossible. The shuttlecraft can carry some competitive firepower, but its light shielding and lack of armor make it a sitting duck in any mission, from aliens to defenders.

Eh, read UE Crusader's post. It looks pretty convincing.

Eh? Eh? What's that, Sonny?
I used to think of myself as a pretty accomplished fighter. But as I stated in my earlier post, I've learned I am out of my league. You "Young Bucks" get all the glory now.

Heh, that one went over my head. Normally my escorts will demolish the Alien Cruiser before I can even get the craft on visual contact, while I duel with the fighters...

The trick, now, is for you to figure out how they got past the fighters.
(edit) You have noticed that escorting cruisers always go for the fighters first, right?(/edit)

Escorts going for the fighters first? No, I have never noticed that...Right when I always warp into the system where the aliens are located, all my escorts take out the cruiser within thirty seconds (using an incredible amount of missiles and cannon fire). Usually by the time the cruiser is toast, a few of my escorts will have then decided to go after the fighters...

Whenever I've played the alien mission, the escorts provided have always gone after the fighters.

Hmmm...Pretty odd. I have done plenty of editing in my copy of Escape Velocity, but not enough to effect your escorts and which ships they attack. Strange...

David and I aren't talking about captured/hired escorts. i had none. We're talking the 1 or 2 Cruiser(s) that the government sends along, which always go straight for the fighters throats. And never kill them, mostly because it's impossible without a tractor beam.
While I did mention that there wasn't any cheating, I could hint that there was some extreme cheapness and abuse of the engine involved.
