    • Are PCs taking our country?

I go to a school in north-east USA, and anyone there, besides a couple smart guys, think that PCs are faster, have more available HD space, better sounds + grafix, etc. Noone seems to notice the awesome superior quality of the Mac. It's got better grafix, a lot more speed (The Macintosh G4 500Mhz is 2.2 times faster than the Pentium III 800Mhz) and definitly has an interface that anyone can understand.
The G4 rivals even the most superior scientific "super-computor", but noone seem to notice. Bill Gates has stolen everything Apple has produced, made it worse, and sold it for a profit. I think the world should wake up and see how great Macs are, and quit sucking up to that *sshole with all the money. 🙂

    • They're not all bad. Speedwise, the G4 holds a slight edge over AMD's latest Ghz K7s even without altivec support. The RISC architecture of the PPC is also going to save it in the long run. x86 is going to hit it's clock limit verysoon. As for graphics, that fact isn't true. The most powerful PC 2D/3D video cards on the PC will make Mac Graphics look like bat barf. A GeForce, for instance, will produce results remarkably better than the most powerful card you can buy with Mac Drivers, the Rage Fury Maxx. Windows is a mixed blessing. For the most part, the interface seems complicated, shrouding, and hard to get used to. The jewels lie in it's amazing customability and the age old ability of the command prompt. Windows is alot like an open shell with some crap scooped onto it in the form of an interface. Deep down, it's got power that the Mac OS has been sadly lacking for it's entire life, Preemptive Multitasking and Protective Memmory. MaxOS X has promised to remedy this long standing shortcoming but it's version of those abilities will be outperformed for some time to come when compared to the finely honed code of the DOS and NT kernels. Windows also browses the web at speeds markedly faster than even a G4 can. HTTP protocols in the MacOS are low and the lack of true multitasking makes loading and displaying webpages slow. Also, the MacOS's desktop file, however innovative and useful, is a technology from 10 years ago and more. Against today's UNIX and FAT file systems, it behaves like a pegnant cow. Cashing with the MacOS is clumsy and slow to retrieve. Again, OSX has promised a fix for this problem as well. I own both an Athlon550 and a G3400 and I can honestly say that the PC runs faster and crashes less often. The G3, however, accells with photoshop and most 2D apps. I've also programmed for both and I can say that they both have their share of glaring problems. All and all though, I don't get this whole Win vs Mac rivalry. They're both computers, they both operate on the same basic binary principals, and they both have their unique places and uses. I can also honestly say that most PC users aren't vocal about their dislike of Macs. until you bring it up, they're fine. Mac users on the other hand tend to be alot more immature.

    • Macs are rising in popularity, so PCs are not "taking this country".

    • Blame John Sculley. He agreed to call of the lawyers when Microsoft threatened to stop Excel for the Mac if Apple sued Gates for violation of contract. Let's also blame everyone with a high possition at Apple for not licensing anything until it was too late. Oh, and blame whoever it was that canceled Star Trek (The Wintel port of the MacOS). Here's a quote from Steve Jobs:

"The PC wars are over. Done. Microsoft won a long time ago" (Feb. '96)

The sad truth is that Microsoft has won. They get $300 Million per year due to their stock ownership in Apple and sales of M$ Mac software, and I don't think they're going to stop Mac development any time soon. Besides, Gates loved the Mac from the start. He made Windows like MacOS because it thought it was great. Another quote (not exact):

"The Mac doesn't do that. I want Mac on the PC. I want Mac on the PC!"

The PCs have dominated, but the markets are clearing up for Apple. PCs wont dominate forever, but we wont be ahead until sometime in the future. Pretty far in the future.

    • First off, PCs have had superior numbers to Macs for a long, long time. So, they aren't 'taking' over, since they did that a long time ago.
I agree, Macs are better. As far as HD space goes, all you have to do is buy a new hard drive. Voila, more HD space. 🙂

    • PCs are more advanced, faster, and above all CHEAPER. Therefore, they are better than Macs.

    • This all is based on needs. A high-end graphic professional would love a quad-processor high end G4 if the rumors of it's July release are true (Yeah, right). A new computer owner is obviously attracted by simplicity and style (anyone say iMac?). A G4 can easily hold it's ground against pretty much everything, but that comes with a rather large price. The battle is now being fought over 'contemporary appeal'. Apple has gotten that market pretty well with it's colorful computers. They lack a lot of software that people want though, so many people migrate to a cheaper, but more supported (software) Wintel PC. So, simple logic boils everything to a few questions:

What do you want? - Something cool or something supportive
What do you need? - C'mon I don't need to tell you this one
Who do you trust? - Bottom line, all tech support from large companies sucks (Ambrosia's seems to do well though :)). Well, okay, this is just my bad experience :p.

When you weigh experience, appeal and needs, you can find what you should spend money on. In this way, it is very hard to say something is better or worse than anything else without weighing all figures.

    • I agree with Micah. It all depends on what you need (what you want to do--I must admit that some of the new AMD equipped computers look pretty good.). I do a lot of intensive graphics, so I want my Mac, plus I like the OS better. I also admit a bias since I learned computers on DOS, which almost drove me mad until I got a Mac. Also, Microsoft put out such buggy stuff for so long, with the "oh, well, buy the new one, it's a bit better and might actually work" attitude that I really don't want to support them, even ignoring their other business practices.

I disagree, because I often get the "Macs suck" (in those exact words) comment whenever someone recommends software to me, and I have to admit it isn't made for my computer. Then, of course I have to point out the ways in which Macs are superior. 😉
