You would probably find it a lot easier, and equally effective, to put your journal in notes, books or plaques, which can be placed behind the start position so that they appear the moment you get into the level.
The real problem with adding, or changing screens is the actual physical size of the pict you are adding. When using ResCompare you have to make sure the memory is big enough to take all the picts you want to change. They tend to make the patch making so slow that you think that even your blindingly fast quicksilver mac has crashed - and I mean slow. Set it going and go out to see a movie or something equally time consuming. If you are lucky it will have finished when you get back.
Then you've got to increase the memory of the patch to more than it's size or you can't apply it.
That's why I don't change the titles file, only the background and sprites.
