    • How do I get the plot moving?!?!

      6 10 373

OK - been playing for a few days now. Am #4 on the rankings list and have done countless hacks. The Revelation virus is at version 3.0 and the Faith thingy is around 0.3 or so and the guy who was the head of the company that did Faith just got arrested.

I have no clue what I'm supposed to do.

I'd love to try to hack ARC, but I can't get the voiceprint, since there's no public access terminal for them.

      Help!

      ------------------

    • I think I'm on a plot line hack - am trying to copy files off the ARC LAN. I got all the way to the main file server (it's 1 hop from a modem), but every time I connect to the main server the LAN alarm goes off and the admin makes the 1 hop and I'm hosed.

I've got the proxy and monitor bypassed as well as spoof running on the modem and main file server.

      What am I missing?

      ------------------

    • You aren't missing anything. That particular LAN is very difficult to hack. Basically, you have to hack it once per file (if you are lucky). It still takes the admin a little time to get there, but it is hard. Spoofing will do no good, and is unnecessary unless it is on 'valid subnet' machine.

Just keep working at it - and make sure that you have a fast machine+modem to do it.

    • I've got the top of the line gateway that's maxed out on everything.

The problem is the main server is one hop from the modem. As soon as I click on the server - wham! - I get disconnected.

Unless there's another way to get to the server (which there probably isn't), you're just screwed. The LANs are generated randomly for each usr. Some of them are simply unworkable.

It's particularly annoying that this should happen in one of the story missions.

    • Now that totally sucks.

So I've got no choice but to start all over again?!?

      ------------------

    • Well, what I did was I bounced off all sorts of things over to that modem you connect to, connected, went to lanview, connected to the mainframe and immediately ran the voice print and hacked the password, and then immediately disconnected.

I then quickly ran over to InterNIC and cleared the logs, then reconnected. Since I disconnected myself, and did it so quickly, the passwords were still good and still input, so I instantly got access to the file server, and had time to download 1 or 2 files before the sysadmin banned me. At which point I'd go clear my logs again, hack the pass again, d/c, clear the logs again, log on and download 2 more files.

You have to do it like, what, 18 times or something, but it worked. Didn't get in any trouble, either. Of course, I'm assuming the 'kicked off the moment you click connect' isn't literal. For me, the modem was just the 1 undefended jump from the main server, and I had exactly enough time to put in the voice pass and crack the normal password (Which was nigh-instantaneous with the maxed out gateway/processors) and hit disconnect before the admin got me.

      ------------------

    • I am having difficulty getting the whole plotline started. It is around Septeber, now I have this really absurd uplink rating where I can't get missions that my gateway's capable of carrying out, and I have done tons of work for ARC. Yet I have heard didly squat from them about anything involving Revelation, which I suppose is either a bug or something that cannot be changed. If there is any alternative to waiting for work until I get disavowed because I'm totally out of cash, then I would quite like to hear it.

    • to sasquatch,

i had the same problem, but the way that i was able to do it was a little tedious and time consuming, but i got the hang of it after the third or fourth one. what you have to do is do the eliptical thing first and then just log off. go back to the main server, the eliptical will be already in there and then all you have to do is do the password and then hurry and copy the first file and copy it over. you have to do it REAL quick, you will probably only get one per try, but thats how i did it. there has to be an easier way, i was just tired of looking for one. hope this helps.

Actually, I think when you get the plot-starting email from ARC after doing work for them was only in the unregistered version. All you have to do is, ^ WARNING: SPOILER AHEAD^

connect DIRECTLY to the ARC central Mainframe, only routing your connection through the ARC Internal Services Machine, and, ignoring the Voice Print ID and Elliptic Surve Thingy, click on Password ID and try to use the login and password from the dead user. Naturally, it won't work, so just disconnect from the server, and fastforward until you get the email from ARC. (It is best to attempt to use the password at least a week before April 29, otherwise it won't work, as it will take ARC about a week to send their "offer.") Remember: if it's May first, and you haven't gotten the offer from ARC, it's too late to start the plotline. That's why I duplicate my Users folder and keep Backup Users somwhere, in case of an unfortunate accident like this.
