A LANs (Local Area Networks) can be found by searching in the internal service machine. Link section.
However, you can find a LAN in InterNIC. It's Sample Company LAN.
It's easy, and can be used as a training area before hacking a bigger one.

If you train on the Sample Network, you still have delete your logs and play it safe. This guide should be helpful. (url="http://"http://www.macgamer.net/games/uplink/index.html")http://www.macgamer....link/index.html(/url)

On a slightly different topic, I've gotten missions that require me to start by hacking a LAN (one of them is a trace the hacker mission). I can't even get access TO the LAN but can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. IF I log on via bounces, it gives me a 'can't access from external links' kind of thing. So I tried hacking the same corps mainframe and accessing it from the links, and got the same message.
Help...

You need to have your last bounce (the one before the LAN) be either the Internal Services Machine or the Central Mainframe of the same company. That way, the LAN thinks you are logging on from an "internal" site.
