    • Hardware upgrades Vs. Gateway upgrades

      11 15 264

What do you think is a better plan:

      1. Buy a whole bunch of hardware upgrades (CPUs, Memory etc.) and slowly save up enough money to buy a better gateway.
      2. Don't buy any hardware upgrades and save all your money for a better gateway.

I think 2 is the better option once you've registered. That way once you have the gateway you want, you can spend the rest of your money on the Fast CPUs. If you are unregistered, however, 1 might be better until/if you do decide to register. What's everyone elses opinion.

I always slowly save up money in the beginning, doing lots of missions and buying max-level software, until I get the first bank transfer missions, so I can steal lots of money and buy the Trinity (or custom gateway). Then I blow all the money on lots of CPUs and memory. Do the modem upgrades really improve the speeds of anything?

    • Yes I am pretty sure
If i am not mistaken then the better the modem the faster each software you run will go at a reasonablly good pace.

ex: bandwith 2, decypher, trace traker, 3 bypassers, and only 200 cpu's= decypher taking 32 secs
but bandwith 8 +same software and cpu's= decypher taking 12 secs
      do you understand?
      i hope this helped

    • I almost always go straight from the first gateway to maxed-out Trinity. You can get your hands on bypasser software real early on, and bank hacks are elementary...

    • If you spend all your money on a great Gateway, you are going to be going just as fast on your new gateway as you were on your old one...and I think the modem makes you download/upload faster (10gqs=10 Gigaquads a second)

    • Wow, it's great to hear about the modems really working because in the user guide they say it "makes no noticeable difference" so I've never bought one.

As for my strategy. I buy the gateway that allows two CPU's and install one 200 Ghz, as early as possible, then I get a proxy disabler and a decypher. I try not to steal money, just to make the game more interesting, in the sense that it becomes a race for time. But, before all this, at the start of the I do the Uplink test before going to their Internal Service system (the code is always the same) then I ONLY buy a password breaker. Next, I accept a few missions, borrow an extra thousand, create accounts at all of the banks, and get Admin access to INTERNIC. I make sure that my first mission is at least $1500 and complete it without a Trace tracker, jump quickly to Uplink and buy a level 4 log deleter and then rush to Internic and delete my logs. I've never been caught for it. I just hate spending money on level 2 log deleters and trace trackers.

      ------------------

    • I've learned that with the first missions (the ones paying 1500), you dont need to delete your logs.

    • The modems don't actually do anything. They're just for fun, really.

    • Modems only really count when your doing file transfer, that can make a big difference if your trying to lift an entire database off a computer.

    • I generally go:
Basic Software (including bypassers) -> Gateway -> Hardware -> Advanced Software (decrypter, LAN stuff, optional HUD upgrades, etc.)

One thing to keep in mind is that if you get a new gateway first with at least one more CPU slot, you don't lose the slow one you start with, which leaves you with a few extra GHz.

If it's just a game, and life is all a game, then isn't the game real life?

    • Since we're talking about ways to buy:

Software(Up to bypassers) ->Gateway(Middle) -> Hardware -> Hack a bank -> Buy the best gateway and best software.

    • Here's my plan, and its worked pretty darn well so far.

      Start:
      hack UTM w/o any software.
Buy password breaker, and take as many missions as possible to build up a list of Internal Services Machines (too lazy to go to InterNIC at this point)
      Hack all those guys,
      Buy HUD_ShowTraceMap (or whatever)
      Proxy Disable v. 5 ASAP,
      Hack Bank,
Delete Proxy Disable v.5, buy bypassers and such, (oh yeah, and a trinity :D)

    • I found focusing on software alone can work well enough. I recently had an Agent whom I started on small missions until he had enough cash to buy HUD_ConnectionAnalysis and Proxy Bypass v5. It's expensive, but if that's all your buying you can get there quick enough. Anyhow, then I took a "Trace the financial dealings..." mission. Once I found where the money had been transferred, I simply hacked the account and took it for myself. I got 900,000 in one take, and all the software, hardware, and gateways money can buy. All this on the starting gateway.
