    • more on ruining systems

      8 14 345

well, I've read on the board the procedure for taking down systems. Basically delete sys usr and log directories, right?

well, I deleted all those on two different "wreck the system" missions, but the emplying company said that I didn't delete all the files and so they were only going to pay me half. (grr)

There are two directories that I can't get to from the console: pub and rec. Do these have anything to do with it? What am I missing? I've deleted all the files I can get to from the console.

Maybe I'm not thinking outside the box enough ... <sigh> that's what I get for playing Uplink when tired. 😛

    • It should work if you do this:

      cd usr
      delete
      cd sys
      delete
      cd log
      delete
      shutdown

cd log and delete isn't nessecary (sorry guys, don't know how to spell that word!)

In other words, what you're missing, Anamacha, is to shut down the system. That's what you need to do.

(edit) I wish there was a preview feature on this board. (/edit)

    • Enter the console, then type commands as follows (order dosn't matter):
      cd usr
      delete
      cd sys
      delete
      cd log
(wait for logs to be deleted)
      shutdown

Or, you can upload the revelation virus to their fileserver and then:
      cd usr
      run Revelation

You should be disconnected once it has started

** (dont type this in the console)**

I forgot to mention it here, but I am shutting down the system. I am doing what you guys say I should do, but I'm not having any luck.

    • wait ... maybe the ORDER in which you do things matters? I've been deleting SYS first, then USR. You guys suggest USR first.

Maybe I'll try that. Worth a shot.

    • You just forgot to shutdown. It is required to distroy the system.

    • hmm...Well, you have to wait until everything is finished until you type in "shutdown", while everything else stacks up, this is automatic once you type it in.

It isnt for me. I just type it all in at once and wait for it to happen as it does...ive never had a problem with this...how strange...

I type it all in at once, too. The advantage to waiting would be that in case you typed it wrong, you have a chance to do it again. I've gotten very careful about typing it.

I'm not entirely sure you even have to stick around, after you've entered all the commands, if you're sure you did it right. I haven't tried leaving until after it tries to reboot.

    • Odd, I typed shutdown once and it just stopped what it was doing and shutdown...musta been a fluke

Gosh, I never had it do that. It always dutifully does the commands in the order I type them.

(I was confused at first by the cd command usage. I kept wanting to type "cd " or "cd .." in between.)

    • hmm, maybe I should wait to get booted off after shutting down? Heretofore I've been issuing the command, waiting for shutdown to start, and the manually disconnecting. (usually by that time the trace is almost complete anyway)
