    • Crash on OSX?

      Hello,

When I start or test my game on OSX, it doesn't work. There is no special error Message, it just disappears and a Message pops up saying that the program had crashed.
But if I start my Game in OS9 Mode it works just fine...

Can somebody help me? I don't want to swich to OS9 to test my game... πŸ˜•

And at last one more question: Where the hell can I set up my Main-Character? ^^ I only found NPC, Race and Class options. I suppose this RPG-maker is mainly west-Style orientated, but is it possible to create old-school east-Style RPG's like Final-Fantasy, Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger, too? (and how difficult could this be?) I used to work with the RPG-Maker2000 from ASCII and Enterbrain in the past, but it is not possible to use it on a Mac, so I had to swich to Coldstone.

thx in future for your help,
      - Ancient

p.s.: sorry for my weird english, I'm german. πŸ˜„

Welcome to the boards, Ancient. Your english beats some of the posts and replys here, so don't worry about that yet.

Try reloading the OS-X game engine. It could be corrupt. Worse comes to worse, use the demo (download) that is available. (Helpful Note: Always back-up your work - Make a copy or stuff it/zip it)

As for your character, you can set the statsics in the Main.cet file of your game(in the events folder). Don't set them anywhere else because you may write over the file when you load a game. You have to set each seperately (i.e.- gb_Stamana = 99) The events window is the best place to do this.

You can make any kind of game you wish with enough modifications. There are files that show you how to build a multi-player type game ( but it isn't really ), and how to have a turn based fighting system. Coldstone is really set up for a "kill-em as you find-em" style of game play. This real time battle system is pretty good, and it would be a shame to just by-pass it for an older style of play. I like turn based, personally. But most of the younger crowd prefers the "get-in-your-face" style and that's what coldstone is best at.

Again, WELCOME! And let us know how things are going for you.

      Hi Albadar!

Thanks for the quick answer. But unfortunately this doesn't work either. πŸ˜• I downloaded the demo again and removed all preferences related to Coldstone and the Coldstone folder itself, but the error still pop's up... I hope I haven't missunderstood you if you ment something else, so please correct me.

Anyone else got the same problem or do you know if there are any Plug-Ins I need to install so that the games work correctly on OSX?

      thx for your help,

In the coldstone folder, there is a folder called 'engine'. This is where the program is located that runs the game in OS-X. It may be corrupted. The actual Coldstone Game Engine is the program you use to input the files to make the game. I believe that CGE calls this file as an "APP" to run the files on your computer. If this is corrupt, that would explain the problem you are having. You can try replacing this file with one from your CD. But if that doesn't work, try using the one from the download. (In the engine folder). I hope this helps you....

    • Hi Ancient. Welcome to the boards, also!

I don't have OSX, so others will probably be more helpful. But I'm not sure that the demo works as well on that OS as when you actually purchase Coldstone. Once you do buy it, I'm pretty sure that you'll need to upgrade it to 1.01 from here:
      (url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/cgi-bin/vftp/show.pl?product=coldstone&category;=essentials&display;=date&file;=coldstone_update.sit")http://www.AmbrosiaS...tone_update.sit(/url)

And if you have problems with it saying that you need to register when you have already done so, then you'll need to ask David Dunham for the latest update. And if you HAVE bought it, then I read your post wrong and please forgive me!

      Hello Debra,

I haven't bought Coldstone yet, but I think about buying it when I found out more about this problem and the possibility's of the program so I can realize my game idea without having any limitations.
The Update was already included in the Coldstone demo version, so this could not be the problem... I hope I can solve this somehow, or maybe I should write an email to Ambrosia or Beenox so they could try to help me.

One more info: the games for Coldstone I downloaded don't work on OSX either! It's strange... πŸ˜•

And I have another question: Can I add more Event Actions, too? Because I think there are currently very few and it doesn't seem they are enough to create cool complex and creative Events. The RPG-Maker2000 I used in the past had a lot of event actions; some not very usefull, but some others like move-sequence editors or changing screen color tone were very cool. And I miss the nice 2d map graphics too... can I use Coldstone as an editor with 2d maps and 2d characters like in old-school snes rpg's too? Would be very nice because I liked this style. πŸ™‚

At any rate, try to delete the /user/library/preferences/Coldstone Prefs file (something like that!) and the actual program itself, then reinstall it. Make sure that, instead of pressing the 'Run' button you perform a proper 'Build Release' as the 'Run' option for OSX (available only in 1.0.0) creates very** unstable applications that don't work very well.

And, of course, if it still doesn't work, drop by the /user/library/logs/crashreporter/ directory, open up the relevent log for you file in TextEdit and paste it here. It can't hurt. πŸ™‚

As to your question about Events, the demo version is limited to 40, if I remember correctly. In the registered version, there are no limits (apart from drive space & common sense πŸ˜‰ ) to the number of Events you may build.

And lastly, welcome to the boards, and good luck with the project! When I do run Coldstone (ie: when Uni's not getting to me) I use it almost exclusively in OSX, so yes, it does work. The demo used to work too.... but I don't have it anymore, I'm afraid.

      A few questions:

What version of OSX are you using? Is it a 10.1 or 10.2 derivant?
What version of Coldstone are you running? 1.0.0 or 1.0.1?

And perhaps a short system spec could be nice. πŸ˜„ :

Coldstone is version 1.0.1, as I said the Demo version included this update.

And I'd say that's most likely the problem. Coldstone has always been a bit less stable on OSX than on 9, and it was never tested in 10.2 before it was released, and hasn't been patched since either. It's most likely a problem with 10.3 rather than anything else.... if you have access to a computer still running Jaguar or earlier, see if you can run the program on that. Since you're having trouble with all Coldstone OSX games, I'd say that Panther is the definite culprit.

Hmm. Comparing it to crash logs I've had of Coldstone in OSX... nothing matches. The crashes I've had in X.1 & X.2 were all similar, but not compared to this. Probably the OS then.... sigh.

      Quote

Sure, but that was not my question. I asked about the event commands, like Message, Teleport, and so on.

I thought it might be that, but I decided to err on the side of caution. πŸ˜‰ No, you can't create new Event actions, you can only utilise those that are included in the engine already. However, with a bit of creative thinking and global use, you can indeed do a great deal that might not first seem apparent. Have a browse through some of the archives on this board, or ask a few questions here, and you might be surprised at how some of the users here make Coldstone sit up and beg, and at how they do it. πŸ˜‰

      Best wishes,

    • Hm... yeah the OS. Do you know if Ambrosia releases a new Patch the next months that could fix that problem?
I can try to run it on the Powerbook of my father too, so I can see if it is really a problem with the OS version.

I'd like to think there will be, but I'm afraid that I just don't know. However, based on the patch record of Coldstone so far (ie: not much) I'd say it isn't likely. But, when Panther GM comes out, it might resolve the issue itself. If it doesn't, it'd probably be worth mentioning to Ambrosia at least. Never know.

Maybe then you haven't heard of Virtual PC for Macintosh? It allows you to emulate "Legally" operating Windows system, and allows you to work on Window programs. MAybe you should look into that if you still want to work with what you did before. Welcome to that boards as well. And your english thus far is fine, sometime better than mine, and I'm native born. But then again, its not really your english skills, its more more of your skills of typing, which are also very good. πŸ™‚

But then again, its not really your english skills, its more more of your skills of typing, which are also very good. πŸ™‚

      thank you! πŸ˜„
I know about Virtual PC, but I think it wouldn't emulate fast enough to work with such programs... And I have only 400MHz at the moment, too. πŸ˜• (my PC processor was about 1GHz) Anyway, I don't do much game creating stuff at the moment because I have not much free time and I hate to work with emulators too (except Console Emu's πŸ˜‰ ), so it's not so bad at all. Well, maybe I get through the tutorial next weekend and then I can decide to buy coldstone or not.

    • I just downloaded the demo version of ColdStone, and followed the directions for creating the demo "medieval" sample game. When the game runs I hear music but see no graphics (window is white in windowed mode, black in full screen), and in fairly short order the game crashes. I'm running the latest version of Panther and I have to say I am not impressed by the apparent disregard voiced in previous posts on this subject. I was quite interested in ColdStone from the looks it it. However Panther has been out for quite some time now (heck I was a few months late getting it myself) and I am not going to spend money getting Virtual PC or whatever to run software that rightfully should be running on Panther by now.

Can somebody bring me up to date on what is being done to correct the problem? If it has been fixed, it really ought to be in the demo because I am using the demo as representative of the product itself in deciding whether or not to purchase the product. If I can't get the demo to work I will not be purchasing the product. It looks like a really exciting product though so I hope someone can give me a good reason to not give up on it.

      Thanks

    • At the moment, Coldstone will not work in Panther. Ambrosia (or Beenox) has hired a person who is working on the application program now, and we're all waiting for it. It's taking some time, but they are addressing the problems.

I am currently making a full-length game using Coldstone. My OS is 9.2, and it works very well for me.

    • Ancient, my advice is a bit different from the others. You're speaking/writing English quite well, but there is a major difference from German. Unlike German, we only capitalize nouns if they are proper nouns, or nouns that could only apply to one thing (such as names of people, cities, and games).

As to the Panther OS, it will take a long time to update CS to Panther. Most companies that have put out updates to their products have several programmers working on that, but Beenox had almost non-existent support. Now we have only one programmer, and not the original programmer at that, working to fix Coldstone. Her effort and skill aside, this is not the ideal situation for an update. Expect to wait, and save your money, for now.

    • Even if you wanted to buy Coldstone at this time, you can't. Ambrosia took it off the shelf untill the Panther bug is fixed.

    • I was talking to Carm earlier this month and I think she said that she had fixed quite a few bugs that she could reproduce every time. She didn't say which bugs but the Panther Bug and the Save game bug fall into this category so things look pretty good.
