    • { CGE ShowCase : 15 days remaining }

Yes indeed, there are 15 days left for submissions to the Coldstone Game Engine Showcase.
      (url="http://"http://showcase.ellrx.com")http://showcase.ellrx.com(/url)

And, as always GET BACK TO WORK!

Aye, its rumored that another showcase might begin when CGE is updated.

      ------------------

      ... ** Big O..ACTION!**

    • As long as no judge enters, I offer a $50 prize to the winner. It ain't much, but it's what I can afford.

I take it that the entrants' games will be able to be placed and be able to be downloaded from Pilky's site after it's over and done with?

    • Actually. All the entrants are in a way 'judges'. There will be an online voting system where you have a month to vote for you favorite game in the 6 categories:
      Best Story
      Best Gameplay/Most Addictive
      Best Sound FX's
      Best Music
      Best Graphics
      Best Overall game

I'm not going to be hosting the games (though I will link to them from the CRC in their reviews). It is up to the entrants to find hosting for them. David Dunham has said that any freeware games made in CS can be uploaded to the CS Add-ons section. I don't know if we can link too them directly though I think linking to the page before has benefits (mainly a free download counter and Rating system :D) and I think that it is a small sacrifice (if that)

Just to remind you. Ghosts of Time 1.0 will be out on Saturday. It is currently in beta.

    • Hmm. Snipped, I'm afraid - unless I do some ftp stuff, I can only upload 2MB files at a max via php - server config. My apologies.

Does that stipulation apply to the executioner as wellż
:: blowing gently, swaying the dagger bound by the silky silver strand ::

Let's be perfectly honest, i personally have no way of distributing the funds to the deserving entrant.
      Tis why:

      Quoted from (url="http://"http://showcase.ellrx.com")http://showcase.ellrx.com(/url) **
" Sponsorship. This is the one thing we don't have at the moment. This year and hopefully in the future we'd be looking for small shareware authors to provide licenses to their software titles. We have no means to distribute physical products. If you are interested in sponsoring please send an email to support@ellrx.com. "
      **

Cash, near as i can tell is a physical product, which i wish to bear absolutely no responsibility in distributing.
( Yes I am the man behind the velvet curtain. )

BY all means don't let this discourage you from showering a deserving participant/recipient with proverbial roses on your own accord through your own channels. ie email the winner and offer them a donation, send me the news of said exchange, i'll post it to the showcase front page.

Obviously with CGE's potential renewed, its more than likely that another "showcase" will be produced.
( By all means if you have the time or resources to construct said operation, please do. The only goal is to boost the number of games built with CGE. Incidentally (url="http://"http://www.idevgames.com")idevgames.com(/url) is beginning its mini udevgames competitions, far greater exposure more lenient rules. However due to panther incompatibility....perhaps the first few contests should be sat out 😉 )

Its great to see the first sponsor come about.

I mean, :: sniffle :: its just so nice to see something that you put so much time and effort into get the appreciation and support of others... :: weep ::

I figure that Tarn was offering some server space....meck.

There are 8 days left, it is not impossible to build a game in 8 days!
And as we say at the Showcase, Get Back To Work!

I originally wanted to set up a nice, easy php based upload script - but max_upload_size is of course set to only 2mb - hence 15mb games aren't going to go nicely.

FTP access - well, I've only got client access to the server (for my account) and, as I'm sure you can understand, I'm a little leery of giving people my ftp passwords for the account.

Sigh. Ah well. Such is life - and you can still upload & direct link to the ASW CS page, if you need space. And who knows, I might be able to think of something.

    • I can't quite understand ellrx's post, so if I'm off the mark, please forgive me.

My offer for a $50 prize to the winner has nothing to do with anyone except me. It would not go through a third party. I would simply be notified of who the winner is and I'd send the winner a $50 money order. There's no legal ramifications to it, as I am an individual and can give whatever money away that I want to whomever I want.

BUT, this is a moot point, since the entrants can vote (I take it) as well as anyone else. The next time, though, you might want to consider this end of the competition.

    • It is just Ell being himself. 😉 If you want to give the winner some money then it is perfectly fine. Just don't get him involved (though I'm sure posting on the news page that there is a $50 prize could be done).

If the entrants do not judge, then I'll be happy to put up a $50 prize for the winning game. I would not judge, either.

    • What's wrong if the entrants judge? We could make a rule that entrants can't vote for their own games and, voila, fairness. In addition, having people who have made similar games in similar time-frames, etc. vote on each others games. It would provide an interesting prospective...

    • Isn't quite fair or, more importantly, ethical, at least in my book. Of course, I was thinking that there would be judges outside of the group for the competition.

    • Good question, LifeKnight. As to who would judge, that would be up to the group, or the people organizing the competition. Someone (or several people) who they think would have judgments about certain things that the competition organizers have identified as categories.

For instance, next weekend I'll be going down south (everything's down south from here though, so don't be impressed) to judge a state-wide theatre competition. The organizers called and asked me to (along with a couple of others). And they asked me to because they know I have the expertise. They're sending me the criteria now. Simple. At least, that's how it works.

    • All ends have been considered.

It was a conscious decision to leave voting relatively open ended ( read : whink ).
I'm not in favor of judges, consider this more of a "people's choice award" sort of deal.

Alongside that, i'm the only guy running this entire thing.
      ---

      Here's the short of it.

Two weeks after 12:00am GMT, Wednesday, January 28th, 2004. The voting period will begin, the radio button polls will begin.

Two weeks later the polls will close, the results will be tallied, and as soon as possible, the results will be posted to the front page in a clear, legible, aesthetically pleasing manner.

That will officially be the end of it.

If no one votes, no votes will be recorded. I'm really unfeeling to this fact, the goal has been accomplished, games have been produced, the "winning" is very secondary in my mind.

I'm not a very we'll cross that bridge when we come to it sort of person, there will be no deviation from the plans.

So if you like a game on your honor please come; download, support, email, encourage, visit websites, start building visually orignal games that you can complete in a timely fashion by setting yourself a schedule and deadline :: inhale ::.

      ... ** Big O..ACTION!**

    • Are there any provisions which prevent a person from voting more than once? If you rate something on Ambrosia's Add-ons page you cannot enter a second rating from the same computer because it tells you that the IP address has already recorded a vote. But there is nothing which prevents a person from entering as many ratings as he/she can find computers to do so on.

The honor system is only as good as the personal sense of honor possessed by the participants.

    • And if we're not that honorable then we definetly have some problems. We'll need to have everyone shipped off to various "honor-schools." 😛

I really see no reason not to trust the game makers (as I know most of them and they are nice people.) Besides them, who's got a motive to try and rig the score? Anyway, a good way to prevent people from voting twice: email entry + IP check. That way you need to click a link in an email you receive AND are limited by IP. Yes, you COULD create a new email account and go to another computer that isn't on your network, but that's going to a LOT of work to rig a contest even if Debra does contribute $50...

    • A juried competition has far less to do with honor or integrity as it has to do with distance. A person, or people, are too close to their own work and the natural competitiveness of fellow competitors to be able to judge with the same critical contemplation as a person who has not created the work and is not involved in competition. The way you have it set up, though, is fine, as that's what you want to do. I'm certainly not complaining. I simply offered a prize if it were juried.

Or, I have another Idea. You could have different catagories that pertain to the game, and keep to the showcase. Example: between the mods, they would judge them and select one game that they determine 'best'. We as members vote on the top three that they would choose from....see what I mean? I could even make a digital award PDF or something to the winner. We could also keep that as a template so that each year a digital award will be given out (and hopefully along with something else if we get more people involved and some sponsers!). I think that this would be the best idea to judge thusfar, and would be similar to how one votes normally.

Personally though, I wouldn't let Stark or TA near the booths come time to vote; I heard that they were both down in Florida right before they needed a recount 😄 .
