I am thinking of adding a long cut-scene to the end of my game. It should be about 6 min and will be of a massive space fight.
My question is "Would you sit and watch a 6 min cut scene?"
If most people say no then I will shorten it.
If most people say they would watch a longer one I will make it longer

    • Yeah I would watch a six minute cut scene as long as it moves the story forward, or in this case wraps the story up. Is the cut scene going to be using in game graphics, or is it going to be a separate CGi rendered cut scene?

    • I don't know, six minutes seems kinda long for me. Normaly I'd be OK with that, but I'm feeling unhappily pessimistic today. I can picture myself watching the movie, when about 2 minutes into it I get interrupted by something (possibly my mother or a terminator, or both), and miss what becomes of the otherwise brilliant game.

    • It would be a CGI movie to wrap up the game. Pleanty of explosions and things going BOOM guarenteed. As for distrubution, the internet would be my main way of distrubution but I am sure I could set up a system where a check is sent to cover the cost of a CD and shipping. If it is good I may consider asking a Mac magazine if they would like to put it on their cover CD (it's a long shot but i have seen worse than what I am planning get on them).

    • I would without a doubt watch a 6-minute cutscene if it was a good one. The only problem I can think of is the massive amount of space (No pun intended) it would take. I mean, i have a 22 second cutscene (very small size, I might add, I have to blow it up in CGE) that's 8.6 megs. On my 56k that would take like a good 20 minutes to download. I'd say, if you are going about distributing your game by other means than the internet, I'd say go for it. If it will be up for download, I'd have to disagree.

    • As for size I would compress it as much as possible as long as it didn't degrade quality. I might also trying to double compress my game (zip and then stuffit the file)but I don't know if it would corrupt it.

    • If the cutscene was good, and it was needed to wrap up the story, then yes, it would be worth watching. As for double compression, it doesn't work.

    • 6 minute cutscene.

i've been interupted during a cutscene and had o sshout down 2 unreasonable people who wouldn't leave me alone for few minutes...i can relate ( the end of FF7 )

I like a good cutscene to wind down the end of the game just so long as i get to actually strike the final blow within the normal, game interface/context of the game. Otherwise i feel cheated. Its like snatching the plate out from under me. back to the point its always nice to put the controller down relax and let the story close out.

Cons, i see it adding extensive size to your game.

    • Does coldstone support MPEG 2 or MPEG 4?
If not do you know any other way of compressing movies very small?

    • Well if Coldstone supports the new version of quicktime (Version 6) it should also support the quicktime mpeg 4 compression. that could keep the video's relatively well compressed. If not Dvix 4 is pretty good, but it might not work on all computers.

      🙂

    • 6 minutes? Thats a pretty long time, but if it is well-rendered I will surely watch it (even if the rest of it is crap) ;). As for the size, I dont know what to do (I often only download demos wich are big, because I think they are nice).

    • I would, but it's got to be good. If I can sit through FF7's 15 minute ending, and have it link with the rest of the story, and you can do the same, no problem.
