    • Is Coldstone worth it?

Is Coldstone worth it? It all seems pretty cool, but I'm wondering if I'll get tired of it after a while. I can't download it right now to see for myself, becase I'm not on a Mac, which is too bad. The Mac I use is at my dad's. So let's say I buy Coldstone. Could I make a sequel to Secret of Mana, or anything like that? Could I create huge dragons with animations and fire attacks and nifty stuff like that? Can the end result be as rad as Chrono Trigger, by any chance? If I can, then I will totally get this. My last question is this. Is there some sort of co-op web site which has games made on Coldstone posted? Like some sort of a community where members swap games and game ideas. Thanks!

Definetly!!! Coldstone has tons of possibilities and it is relatively easy to use.

Yes, but it will be a lot of work. But that would be the case with any game. I suggest you get the demo to try it out first, as the demo is almost the equivalent of the full version. DON'T make anything you would want with the demo as there have been some bugs with compiling games that have files made in the demo.

The place to swap games and game ideas is here! This is also the place to get help on any problems or questions you have about coldstone (though try the manual and FAQs first). If you would like an example of the games that CS can make, check out PoG. There is a demo (for mac and windows) available on Ambrosia's website. Or just check out this link: (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/pog")www.ambrosiasw.com/games/pog(/url)

    • I think Coldstone is worth $50 (or it will be once an update is posted 😉 ) but it is not the Holy Grail of RPG creation.

If you can draw huge dragons, you can make as many as you want with as many frames of animation as you feel are necessary (within reason).

As far as making a sequel to Secret of Mana, there are a couple of issues - within coldstone there is no easy way to make a party system. The other problem being the fact that you need to get permission from Squaresoft to base something on their world and characters.

Rad end results are certainly possible, but Coldstone is made for a single player action rpg w/o a party system. So you need to keep that in mind. Through creative scripting, though, you can get Coldstone to do some things it wasn't made to do.

And the co-op site you asked about: you're looking at it! Check the (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/coldstone/addons.html")Add-On(/url) section for various downloads to help you make your game and the (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/coldstone/chronicles.html")Chronicles(/url) to read (and respond to) some short stories about different games people are working on. Finally, other than (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/pog/")PoG(/url), there aren't too many finished games - in fact none that I know of. If you look through the web boards you can find a few public betas, though. I believe (url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/cgi-bin/ubb/postdisplay.cgi?forum=Forum48&topic;=001666")Klatu's(/url) is the latest - and it rules.

But before you go out and buy it, you should probably try and get your hands on the demo. You might also want to take a look at some of Coldstone's most annoying (url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/cgi-bin/ubb/postdisplay.cgi?forum=Forum48&topic;=001654")issues(/url), because there are a few things that have yet to be ironed out and can cause a lot of frustration.

      Hope my ramblings help.

    • Thanks CI-Ia0s! Ok, I know about PoG, but is there a place on the CS web board where I can download a game created by a user instead of a ready-made CS game? Have you finished any games so far? If you have, then where can I try one out? Oh, also, do you think Cold Stone has what it takes to kick around for another year or so? Because I want to get into something which has a fan base for at least that long. Thanks again. Oh and thanks also sanka. Yeah, your ramblings helped!

    • Scan down the list of threads a bit till you come to "Beta for a new game" or something like that. Klatu has made a new game to help little children learn the alphabet and how to read. If Coldstone is updated (HINT, HINT to Beenox) then it will most likely be around for quite a while. I find it to be a great program for what it does. However, you should make sure it is what you want before buying. The demo can do everything, it is just limited to a certain ammount of what you can do. Download the demo and go from there.

    • Yep, just like any other application program, it may or may not do everything that you want. I find that it takes quite a lot of time and effort to learn how to use Coldstone and how to build a game, but to me it's worth it. I suggest you download the demo and try it out without actually creating a game with the demo. I also trust that the developers will take Coldstone, develop it, and offer more choices so that games created with it can have an edge. Meantime, I'm learning how to use it and creating maps and graphics.

Things develop. I have Civilization in the black and white version on a floppy disc, which I think was the very first version. It was cool then. I suspect that once I make my own game, then I'll develop it further when I'm able. Such is the way of the technological world.

      Good luck!
