-->Let me remember you that all games created with Coldstone can be compiled as stand-alone games for both the Macintosh and Windows in no time!
Can i make hybrid games too or is it neccicary(sp?) to make standalone games?

Stand-alone games. I don't think there is such a thing as hybrid applications.

      That is impossible.

Compiled machine code is different, for different processors so there is no chance you could make hybrid applications.

    • One word: packages. If only you could get the different OS producers to all support them...

You mean in Coldstone, i suppose. If you wanted to sweat a lot, i think you could compile something in Java (it would be a rather clumsy game though, i suppose). 😉

    • Is the data the same for both platforms?

If it is you could probably make a universal installer i Java that installs the respective version of the main app for each OS without being a much larger download....

    • Of course, it might be useful to remember that:

      1. Java is optional under Mac OS 8/9. It is installed by default, but some people (myself included) opt not to install it because the implementation is clumbsy and causes virus scanners to choke as they scan .jar after .jar.

      2. Games don't need installers under OS X. I, personally, tend to be wary of any program that requires an "installer" which just copies stuff to /Applications. Put it on a disk image, for crying out loud.

A lot of hybrid games work by having the data on a shared portion of the CD, which both platforms can read. These games have typically required the CD to be in the drive to play, however.

    • wait you're saying there's never been a hybrid program?? My internet startup program thingy works on both PC and MAC.

That would be because there are two seperate applications, one for Mac, and one for Windoze. The OS simply will only see the one which it is suposed to use.

Actually, as far as I know, Coldstone compiles the games as C++. Assembly code would far too complex for a program to manufacture.

And assuming it does use C++ (as most programs do) it doesn't really make much difference what the processor is, only what the OS is.

    • But I will be able to compile both Mac and PC versions from my Mac, correct? I can't wait till this comes out! 🙂

    • A lot of different types of files can be read by both PC and Windows, such as movie files, and others. There would have to be two different applications though (i think).

I doubt that it would really matter if you made one or two, as people can just get the one they want.

Also, I was really interested about being able to make mac ones on my PC. I didn't think you could, but I can't actually think of reasons you can't at the moment (tired).
