I know that these links have been posted before but as search is dead I cannot go back to retreive them. Please post if you have any helpful links that provide insight into creating good RPGs. Also, (/me points at sanehatter) could you please post links to the homepages of good graphics/sound apps that you guys use. Thanks in advance.

    • Amapi is wonderful, I used it to make a Goblin after only having it for two days. And it's FREE! I feel so guilty using such a great program. I don't even know what to make next, I would recommend this program to EVERYONE!

    • I recently found a good link for making 2D tiles and sprites (I wonder if I'm the only one making a game w/ only 2D graphics) 🙂

Some of it may seem a bit elementry, but it has some good points and I think it's worth checking out.

Oh, and this is just an idea, it won't work so well with my game but it'd be neat if somebody pulled it off...I wanna see a game where all the graphics look like a big water color painting. (and not just graphics with Photoshops watercolor filter applied :)) Okay, so some times I have good ideas, and the rest of the times I have bad ones... 😄

      Hope the link helps.

    • 2D sprites, that's different. That could be interesting though.

Different? Ever heard of SNES? Or any other pre-3D game?

    • Was SNES all 2d?

    • yes (unless you count that "Super FX" chip they used in Star Fox as 3D...)

My kit, as it exists in ultra-streamlined form on my Powerbook:

      3D: Hash's Animation Master: (url="http://"http://www.hash.com")http://www.hash.com(/url)
      Image Editing: Adobe Photoshop: (url="http://"http://www.adobe.com")http://www.adobe.com(/url)
      Typeface Creation: Fontlab: (url="http://"http://www.fontlab.com")http://www.fontlab.com(/url)
      Audio Synthesis (1): U&I; Software Metasynth: (url="http://"http://www.metasynth.com")http://www.metasynth.com(/url)
      Audio Synthesis (2): Cycling 74's Max/MSP: (url="http://"http://www.cycling74.com")http://www.cycling74.com(/url)
      Audio Editing: Bias Peak: (url="http://"http://www.bias-inc.com")http://www.bias-inc.com(/url)
Audio Multitracking: Pro Tools Free: (url="http://"http://www.digidesign.com/ptfree")http://www.digidesign.com/ptfree(/url) (although I'm seriously considering switching to Bias's Deck)
      Video Effects/Compositing: Adobe's AfterEffects: (url="http://"http://www.adobe.com")http://www.adobe.com(/url)
Video Editing: Apple's Final Cut Pro: (url="http://"http://www.apple.com")http://www.apple.com(/url)

Note that all of this stuff (except PT FREE) costs major $$, Animation Master being one of the cheaper pieces of software I use at $300. There are plenty of other great software packages out there, but this is what I determined best does what I need to do with maximum utilization of my hard drive space.

Here's some other fun softwares that might be more attractively priced for some of the people here:

      Audio:
      Tom Erbe's Soundhack: (url="http://"http://www.soundhack.com")http://www.soundhack.com(/url)
      Player Pro: (url="http://"http://www.quadmation.com/pphome.htm")http://www.quadmation.com/pphome.htm(/url)
      Melody Assistant: (url="http://"http://www.myriad-online.com/melody.htm")http://www.myriad-on....com/melody.htm(/url)
      REplay PLAYer: (url="http://"http://www.essl.at/works/replay.html")http://www.essl.at/works/replay.html(/url)

      Visuals:
      Graphic Converter: (url="http://"http://www.graphicconverter.net/")http://www.graphicconverter.net/(/url)
      Meshwork: (url="http://"http://216.246.19.186/meshwork/index.html")http://216.246.19.18...work/index.html(/url)

If there's enough interest, I may turn some of my Max/MSP synthesizers into standalone applications available as cheapware. REplay PLAYer was made with Max/MSP, and I've got a number of similarly strange audio tweakers.

If you're into video synthesis, you might also like:
      nato.0+55 (requires Max): (url="http://"http://www.eusocial.com")http://www.eusocial.com(/url)
      UI Software's Videodelic: (url="http://"http://www.uisoftware.com/videodelic")http://www.uisoftware.com/videodelic(/url)

Also, anyone into media creation on the Mac who also happens to be into Radiohead may enjoy this bit on apple's site: (url="http://"http://www.apple.com/hotnews/articles/2001/07/radiohead/")http://www.apple.com...1/07/radiohead/(/url)

    • WOW! Thanks sane. Now if only I had about 3000$ more to my name.

Does anyone know any sites that offer advice on how to create good rpgs? I remember a few of them, but I don't have the links.

    • Hey, in response to Sanko's idea for a watercolor game, i have an idea for the plot that i thought up last night, (explains the gap between Sanko and My responses,) but i was just curious...
How the heck would you make the graphics anyway? I was trying to picture what it would look like last night, and i can see it in my head, but i'm not quite sure how you'd make that sort of art. And especially since on watercolors, sometimes the colors spill out of the lines, or they don't quite reach the black borders of the character or tree or road or whatever.
So if anyone, or maybe you, Sanko, know how to go about doing the graphics, share the wisdom!! 🙂

    • Hey, BTW, even if this has nothing to do with this post, do you know where I can find RPGMaker for Mac, presuming it actually exists...

      ------------------
      Greetings, all-powerful archmage!
Finally, you have done it again, as it should have been so many years ago, the archmage powerful enough to gain possession of the ultimate spell. Armageddon is a powerful and frightening spell, as devastating to yourself as to mankind. You will no longer be eligible to receive protection from the council. From now on, you are on your own. Good luck, and may your powers be with you.

The time when RPGMaker exists for the MAc is the time when pigs will fly and turtles tap-dance.

No prob. I'm gonna plug one more product I find necessary for my work: Snapz Pro 2, and now Snapz Pro X: (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com")http://www.ambrosiasw.com(/url) (couldn't resist).

As for articles about RPG-making and computer-game-making in general, I'm going to suggest Gamasutra: (url="http://"http://www.gamasutra.com")http://www.gamasutra.com(/url) . Dig through their archives, there's plenty of good stuff there, if you can wade through all the hyper-technical programming stuff, that is. 😃

    • When I said that a 2D RPG would be different, I meant different for Coldstone. You can't all act like you thought of coldstone as using 2d drawn sprites. I just think it WOULD be kind of interesting actually, I once did that in Myth II. Games are ALWAYS more fun when you use them to make things that it wasn't thought to make. Like animals in EV or giant robots in Myth. Or an underwater fishy worl in Quake II. Don't you think?
