    • The "Third" Genre

Well, everything seems to be underway. People are working on their games, Coldstone is in beta, and there's speculation everywhere that can't really be answered by the beta testers. A.k.a., this board seems to be revolving around these things. I'd like to change the topic to 'The "Third" Genre.'

I was thinking, and I realized that I haven't heard of anyone who is making a modern-day or historical RPG. For instance, no one has an RPG that takes place in the time of Caesar or maybe a New York backstreet crime type thing. Everything seems to be so SF and Fantasy-centric.

IS anyone making something for the "Third" genre?

    • I have plans for a modern day rpg set in Canada (Not the real Canada, but the one everyone hears about with the mountain yaks and igloos and all that). My personal fave is modern-day.... even if you might have to stretch things a little...
I hadn't thought of creating a historical rpg, but that sounds like a good idea as well.

    • Please refrain from making comments about Canada. I am fairly sure I could take you all on (you guys are all 3'10 and weigh 54lbs right???)

Somebody did express interest in a civil war RPG, not sure if that is going forward or not. And now for some shameless self promotion

ANGEL'S FATE, coming soon! (or later)

    • Me and shad's game is a fusion of modern and fantasy.

    • Haha don't worry DarkBlade, I'm Canadian too.

      incorrect...

there has been talk of a game called
      "hoodlum" some time ago
I'm considering turning out a version of the popular TI "Drugwars"

as far as history goes (history being already written), it leaves little license
except in the small run of historical fiction.

And for modern day, the closest thing you have to powers (spells) are guns, and drugs.

there has also been rumored the creation of an adult CG production. (don't ask, cuz' I won't tell)

There are plenty of games set out of fantasy that(probably won't do as good) are in production, you just have to look/and ask

      **"seek and ye shall find"...

    • The game I am thinking of making (note: No Garauntee's) Will be a semi-historical game, set in a greek-ish time, though I'm gonan fudge timelines a bit. It won't revolve around historical events, though I doubt I will be able to resist stealing some historical characters and putting them in. (Anyone know who Alkibiades is? Damn he is cool). There would be supernatural in it, like priests and blessed powers derived from divine lineage, or what not, but supernatural monsters will be rare and powerful.

The other game i'd like to make would be a very surreal modern game. How many people know of WHite Wolf's Mage: The Accension table top game? I really like the idea of a modern day mystic awash in the such times of disbelief, or maybe the sterotype homeless street wizard kind of deal. I Seriously doubt I'll do anything about this one though, since i'm not terribly interested, I can't think of much of a plot, and I doubt I could be bothered to make all the extra graphics that would be needed. If someone else wants to make such a game, i'd love to play it.

So yeah, I believe there will be some 'third genre' games out there.

Heh heh, good idea, a Canadian civil war game. Anyway, my game is going to be present day and will be about a guy named Bob.

    • it would be pretty sweet if someone came up with a marathon rpg. if the lead character's name was bob, though, the game would have to be made up of various scenarios where bob always dies in the end. (heheh) a marathon rpg would require a very different setting from the original games. maybe set when the main char (who survived marathon) got back to earth. don't know the whole story well enough, but there's probably a cool game idea there..

I don't really think the point of marathon was getting into the charicters, but go ahead if you want to...

Are any of you familiar with (of course you are) the 'Zena' series on TV?

Chill, it seems that much can still be done with the 'historic/mythic' theme. Yes, you can say 'small run', but 'Zena' seems to be pretty successful. 😄

    • a marathon rpg would be a pretty big stretch, you're right. probably a better idea in the moment than in fact. those bungie.org guys are really into that game, tho..

      ------------------

    • About the Marathon idea...

      1. You would have to get Bun......er, MS-BUNGIE's permission to do this. Heh, and Ambrosia makes many Mac-only games. Draw your own conclusions.

      2. Actually, this probably would be a cool idea, but Marathon would become completely different from a RPG standpoint....how would the game survive the conversion (actually, I'm hoping it would, because that would be a testament to the awesome power of Coldstone)

      3. Bob must be killed. Many. Many. Many, many times. Did I mention that Bob must be killed?

    • 🙂 The mention of and Adult CG game sparked somethign in my mind, A long distant memory, almost fergotten...

      LEISRUE SUIT LARRY!

How cool would it be if someone (obviously who was really bored:P) took the time to make Leisure Suit Larry goes Fantasy? Now that would be classy. 🙂

Hey quit looking at me like that, I know you all enjoyed it to, admit it, that was one good game! 😛

    • Quest for Glory 5 had a lot to do with Rome, I think. But of course it was a fantasy game. See I think the whole RPG genre is flawed. Every game is an RPG. Mario Kart is an RPG to those who get into it. Any game that you can get into, and enjoy is an RPG because RPG means roleplaying game, so in Mariokart you take on the role of that little mushroom and get blasted by the blonde girl in pink.
So I think the whole RPG genre of wizards and swords should really be called Fantasy, or something like that. But like many acronyms, the meaning has been warped into something to fit our gaming minds. Maybe fantasy sounded too much like a book when the acronym was being coined, and that would be a definite turn off for some gamers.

They tell me thats what everybody knows.
There's no such thing as sanity, and thats the sanest fact--
Thats the way the story goes...

    • True, I agree with your opinion that the RPG genre is warped and really should be called fantasy. Role Playing Game is just too broad.

As for the constant CAPS GameFanatic, I'd recommend you stop it. It does not sit well with me and probably comes off as inmature(sp?) to everybody else.

I have no problems with the caps he's used, as long as he doesn't use them in excess, he's OK in my book.

    • Well, actually, I think that most mature audience members should be able to filter through immature material...

Therefore, ALL CAPS shouldn't bother the members of the community who are mature...

No offense intended...just wanted to point out that if there is a problem with a post, it will be deleted, making this argument about ALL CAPS moot.
