Could I put vehicles in the game? How about riding animals (horses) and other locomatives? I'd like to incorporate that in my game.

    • Hmm... well I remember someone (I think it was Dee, but I'm not sure) said on the old web board that to make a ship you could have an event that would replace your weapon with a new one called "Canon" and change your player's sprite to a ship, so yes it would be possible with a little ingenuity.(sp?)
And for the locomotive you could have a large, animated picture that looked like a train moving and have an event to change your player's location to where the train stops.

Just use an action of type "Player Map Icon" in an event to change the player's picture to a locomotive (or a locomotive animation with smoke and everything). Same thing for any other type of vehicle.

Is it possible, though, to change the speed with which the player moves? If so, that would make riding a horse pretty easy (and cool to do).

    • Will it be possible to make it so a train could only go on the train tracks?Otherwise it would be silly. Is it possible to mount a weapon on your vehicle that could destroy rocks or drill the ground for treasure for example.

Also, would it be possible to make it if you press LEFT, you go left slow, then faster... and when you let go you don't just STOP, you slow down first. Would that be possible?

That'd probably take up more code than is really required. That's more appropriate for analog control like a joystick. Personally, I find that a walk/ run key works fine, and if it's available, I always use the option to always run. I've played a few RPG's in my time, short as it has been.

Hmm... I wonder if it would be possible to load up code from another game as a sort of minigame. Think about this: the game I'm working on with some friends is to use flying vehicles like jets quite a bit as part of the RPG. Think about Rebel Assault and RA Deuce. Make it as non-linear as EV, the ground missions more like a traditional RPG (HP, MP, battle screens, yada, yada) and fit the vehicle missions to fit the storyline, and you have the basic concept behind our game. Except I'm not so sure it's going to be all that non-linear.

You can change the player's location, right? So couldn't you make another, semi-parallel map, with just the scenery on it and the train tracks, and then have the player become a train, and be placed on the tracks. On the edge of the tracks is an invisible wall. At each station is an event that turns the player back into a player and transports him back to the real map. Would that work?

I presume that you could give and take weapons as soon as the action took place, too, judging from that screenshot with the actions in it.

      ...

Ok you missed the original conversation:

I am not talking about running or walking. I am saying if you are in a car, would it be possible to simulate car movement. A car does not start and stop at the same constant speed.

    • I'm wondering about horses. In my game, the King gives you a horse at the beginning as a quicker way of getting around. You can get off him anytime and leave him anywhere, and he will always be at the stable in any town, so if you go to a town, he is at the stables no matter where you left him. Can you do this?

I can think of a way to do this if you can have variable speed in your game.

    • I think that the game would be seriously missing something if it did not have this feature. That probably means they'll include it.

    • It would take a lot out of the game if you could not change your speed. As for the horse in the stable, well, that may take a little ingenuity. Such as just putting a horse in every stable and when you get off your horse he disappears (that would be pretty lame though). I am sure there is a better way.

      ------------------

    • I'm thinking setting an event that unless you are riding the horse, it is always in the stable. If you get off of it and there isn't a stable in the area, then it will be there till you leave the area. For riding the horse, you just change your speed and character graphics probably.

    • Conceivably, you can change the map, so you can change your graphics. The game would be very poor if you could not change your graphic, for instance, you would look the same if you were weilding a battleaxe. No. You would have a different graphic for that. So you probably would be able to, like, 'weild' the horse and then you could changer your grpahic. Or you could 'weild' your horse as a weapon and that weapon gives you a speed powerup... The problem is with the speed. If you have a modifiable attribute called speed, there you go.

      ------------------

    • I hope that you can have a vehicle that you can sort of move around on the map and leave it wherever you want. Admittedly, it would not do all that much for the way that the game actually worked, but in most games I've played, (especially Squaresoft games with their airships, etc.) you can mount/dismount your vehicle. It's just a nice touch, but nice touches are what separates good games from great ones.

      ------------------
"Don't blame me, I voted with the majority!"

    • Well, the problem here would be if you could script veichles to return to where they came from, or whether this is default. I don't see why map objects should 'teleport' themselves, but they could conceivably be programmed as temporary objects that are cleared when no longer necessary. But I think that if you used a horse as an object that gaver you a speed powerup, then you should be able to leave items anywhere, hence logic dictates that you can leave the horse anywhere...

      -cybergnu

      ------------------

    • I guess that my hope comes down to this: I hope you can drop things on the ground. I can't say that I expect this ability, but it would definately be a welcome feature. Also, dropping the item would have to be an event that would be able to trigger a screen change, and the item would have to be there in the next screen. (The reason that a screen change would be necessary is this? IN your Plane you can traverse mountains and water, though not necessarily land in them, and you can not on foot. The only way I see for doing this is having too locations, one with impassible mountains/oceans/etc, and one without. I'm asking for a lot here, I know, but I can dream, can't I?
