    • EV/EVO Chronicles: Cutlass: The Party (can that be the title?)

I had joined the crew of the IDA frigate Cutlass originally as a fighter pilot. But I was more needed as a soldier in the boarding party. Pirates in the Great North were out targets most often.
“Pirate Vessel soon to be disabled, boarding party on the ready” Said the captain on the loud speaker followed by the usual whine of the speaker.
“Sanchez and Hamilton your going in first so grab flash grenades. York and Slanj where are your carbines?” Ordered Roamer, or squad commander and most experienced combatant.
      “Sir, when do we brief?”
“When we’re on the shuttle Slanj.”
Loading the shuttle we were told that an unidentified Pirate vessel had been disabled and that because of analysis it was probably a frigate. Most of our money came from boarding frigates, which were loaded with cargo and money from their raiding. Critics of my profession say that we let piracy happen to make a profit from the property they had stolen.
My thoughts were soon interrupted by the sound of the shuttle pilot yelling “Thirty seconds to attachment. Load up boys and girls!” The seven men four women and two pilots would make up our thirteen person squad.
The shuttle attached and forced open the hatch door to the Pirate vessel as we waited for the floor door to open so that we could claim our prize.
      “Sanchez ready with the flash-bang.”
      “Yes Sir!”
The floor door opened to defensive fire from the pirates as Sanchez hurled his grenade through to blind the pirates. Their firing soon stopped but the ricochet of the pirates hit Winouski in the neck. “She’s hit! She’s hit! Oh my god!” yelled the new guy on the team.
“Clamp it and stop the bleeding now! Rickson you have the bandages!” yelled Roamer to keep the situation under control.
In the chaos on the shuttle some of the party had jumped into the Pirate vessel, named Shadow Dog, while the Pirates were still blinded. “Hamilton get in there!”
“Yes sir!” I said as I fell into the hole where a fire fight between my group and a pirate who had obviously shielded his eyes was going on in our favor. I was covering Sanchez as he moved closer to the holdout when a door opened revealing five more pirates pouring in over Sanchez. They charged him because guns were too close quartered. A horrible scream came from two of the pirates followed by the sound of Sanchez’es .45 pistol firing twice. The holdout took the opportunity to take aim at him but was impaled in the shoulder, neck, and finally head by a three round burst from Slanj.
As the final two were killed the one way hallway was secured as the rest of the team regrouped. Roamer ordered me and six others to enter the door the pirates had entered from to patrol the hall way. One team member detached the shuttle and headed back to the Cutlass. Roamer and the other four were to follow us a good distance back to protect us from hiding enemies, in usual procedure.
Heading in what we thought was the general direction of the cockpit we were frequently stopped by compartments that had to be cleared. In one, Corbi leaped in while scanning his peripheral vision to check for targets. When he leaped a pirate armed with a shotgun blasted Corbi in the Kevlar vest sending him flying to the wall. Everett then peered in and saw the pirate was frozen, and just a boy. Not wanting to kill him he grabbed the gun and aimed it at the boy.
“How many people are on this ship? We’ve already killed eight, and soon to be nine if you don’t cooperate.”
      “There's twenty seven total.”
On my head set Roamer was yelling over the resistance fire that there was about eight attacking his group.
“There is only nine left after those few if our prisoner is telling the truth.”
Our conversation was cut short by the sound of fire coming down the hallway returned with carbine and pistol fire. When the Pirates had fled our position there men ran up, followed by two, followed by two more until we reached the end of the hallway with distance between us. The hallway opened up to a large two story area with a see through grate for a floor and solid grates that covered latters to access the other level. As we entered cross fire from the pirates hit me, Sanchez, and Slanj. None were wounded only shaken. Soon the pirates were executed in our professional manor.
      “Roamer where are you?”
“We are on our way to the bridge, Hamilton.”
“Cutlass, this is boarding party, come in.”
      “Boarding party this is Cutlass.”
Our transfer to the Cutlass was a welcome relief from the fighting that had just gone on. The ship was sold at the next station for fifty thousand credits and its cargo made us each in the boarding party a little richer.

    • I like it. It gives us an idea what the life of the poor suckers who do our capturing work for us is like. This has given me an idea.............

    • Yes, proofreading is good. "Executed in our professional manor" means that you dragged them to your manor before shooting them.
