I get similar performance under 8.6. I don't think it can be helped.

I play in window mode all the time, because full screen gives me epilipsy seizures, or something. Anyway, I've gotten used to the framerate (about 30-40 fps, usually). With the water effects turned off, I've reached well over 1000 fps.

Although, of course, that has nothing to do with it. I found out the reason I don't get disconnected is the long ping time at openprojects.
