    • I need some keyboard tips.

      7 9 1477

Every time I (try to) play Avara I get tips from polite people that I should aim down using the mouse to regulate how far my gernades fly. Being right handed the problem is obvious. I can hardly control the blasted hector with my left hand let alone aim along with all the latency (I have a 28.8 modem).

So anyway, do any of you right-handed players have any tips for dealing with this problem?

    • Easy. Use your left hand on the keyboard and right on the mouse. It takes some practice and getting used to, though. Practice using your left for keyboarding in solo levels, where no one can see you be humiliated as you get blasted into slag by UFO's.

    • That's what I've been doing becuase of the obvious difficulties with having my arms crossed.

Well I guess I'll go practice then.

    • This originally gave me a bit of an advantage. Being left-handed, but also used to using a mouse in a right-handed world, I'm used to making sophisticated movements with my left hand (such as controlling my avatars in Quake 3, Avara, or Marathon) but I also use the mouse with my right hand all the time, just like everyone else.

However, now that everyone has had some time to compensate, I tend to get put in my place a little more often than I'd like. 🙂

    • Ergh, just can't keep in control with my left hand. I'll try putting my mouse on the other side of the keyboard next. Ambidextrous people are very lucky.

    • Just wondering, you are useing the 'w' 's' 'a' and 'd' keys to move, right?

    • Hmm, I use the mouse for aim and the keyboard for movement and I'm right handed... and I'm pretty sure I'm not ambidextrous. The thing is, it's much easier to move with a bad hand than it is to shoot with one, because shooting is for precise correction or rapid grenade stuff, and movement is just to get you to your opponent so you can do those things. So I'd use right for aim. Don't bother with correcting your sites with the keyboard, just do that with the mouse.

    • Hey, I have a solution.. originally(sp?) I used my EV control settings for Avara.. they seemed to work, and after some tweaking they seem to do alright. Since I like talking/taunting/etc. I have all of my lettered keys free of controls. I use the numeric keypad for movement, the 7,9,1,3 keys for grenade, missile.. use the clear, equals, slash keys for head movement, equals being the center key for center view.. the 0 key or something for jumping.. Oh yeah the mouse... I use my left hand on the keypad.. use my right for mouse.

      gotta go.

    • Basically, it requires a lot of practice. I'm right handed, but Avara managed to teach me to keyboard with the left hand and mouse with the right. I now use this to deadly effect in Unreal and Quake, as well. 🙂 I'm not quite as good at Avara as I used to be, when I played for a few hours everyday, but I can still stuff a few 'nades down your throat...
