    • Numerous ways. Other missions, crons, char resource, buying ships or outfits, hailing pers ships, etc.

      For a storyline mission, you might want the first one with an availability of !b7999 or whatever you want your storyline lockout bit to be, and then set both the lockout bit and the bit for the next mission on completion.

    • I don't believe three days later is 'a while', but I have an urgent problem.

      I know how to create planets and systems. However, I have hit a strange problem. One time, when I was about to enter an uninhabited system connecting two inhabited systems, the game froze on me, and then the error "the application EV Nova has unexpectedly quit" appears.

      I made a new system, and scrapped the other one. I also added a planet into my new system. But when I try again to see if the system works, the game hangs on me again and gives me the "the application EV Nova has unexpectedly quit" message again.

      Why would this be happening? If anybody can help me, please remember that I have two computers. The one that has the "EV Nova unexpectedly quit" problem is my PowerPC G4 running Mac OS X 10.3.9, and this computer has Polycon EV installed. My other computer runs Leopard and is a PowerPC G5 running Mac OS X 10.5. What extra numbers I don't know. The G5 uses normal EV Nova and many extra plug-ins.

      The second part about the computers, I just wanted to add for those who are curious. My only problem is with the G4.

    • It sounds like a graphics related problem. Check that all spobs in the system point to the appropriate spins, all spins point to the proper rles or picts, all ships point to the proper shans, and all shans point to the proper rles or picts. If there's asteroids, check those too.

      Spins? I don't remember working with those... and the ships are pointing to the proper shans. Asteroids, I wouldn't know...

      To tell you the truth, JTH, my uninhabited system worked, but after a few days, when I jumped in one time, the game froze. But if this problem happened, why didn't all my other systems make the game freeze?

      (EDIT) I have actually got my first mission to work! YES!!!!

    • Double check the shans themselves then and make sure they point to the right rles.

      If that doesn't work, a debug log may hold the answer.

      When it says 'system <insert number here> makes reference to nonexistent dude resource <insert another number here>', I think Anubis programed the game this way. Otherwise, I don't see my problem, although the system problems are very very long. The periods mean I cut it short, as it wouldn't allow me to post with this long of a problem.

    • Is there anything else in there after the nonexistent dude errors?

    • There are so many errors that I think you may be missing a necessary data file. Check to make sure you have everything. Usually systems aren't coded for dudes until the dudes are coded.

    • Hmmm, it doesn't look like you encountered the error in your debuglog. When you made this one, did you enter the game-crashing system? If not, do it again except make your game crash and post that debuglog. And you can just edit out all those "references to non-existant dude" errors so you don't have to upload it.

    • Done. Strangely, when I did so, the debuglog abruptly ends at the system I was about to enter.

      Here's the file, though. Also, I found that most of the data was taken up by the system errors.

    • No error dump, definitely graphic related then. Try removing things from the system (dudes, spobs, asteroids, etc.) until you can enter the system without crashing. Then add one of whatever you removed, see if it crashes, and repeat until you have everything that crashes the system. If it turns out to be a dude, do the same thing for the ships in that dude resource. This takes some time, but it'll narrow down the problem.

      If they're spobs in the system, I'm going to go ahead and guess one of them is causing the problem.

    • Personally, I usually look over the data files for bugs or errors, and launch the game until I have no problem entering the system or doing whatever I'm trying to do, instead of removing and replacing. That method is sometimes the best, though, if you're very practiced in spotting bugs. Sometimes, especially graphically, it can be the difference between a 0 and a -1 in a situation where the difference matters, and it will crash. Also, issues with a sprite being the wrong size can cause a crash, although usually those crashes are at startup. If it's a dude, it could be that the total possibility of all of the ships doesn't add to 100% (I've heard of cases where this doesn't cause a problem, but I've never had it not cause a problem for me).

      I'm with Josh in looking at the spobs first, because if it's a problem with ships, asteroids, or something like that, the problem will likely appear in other systems as well.

    • This is probably none of my business, and I greatly aplogize in advance for my presumption, but I made a couple of "tweaks" to your backstory...

      Five hundred years later
      The Federation continues its war with the Aurorans and the Rebels; and the Bureau of Internal Investigation continues its secretive and quasi-official information-gathering, manipulation of intergalactic politics, and its private war against those who oppose it.

      A legendary T0 Vell-os named Vehemel rose to power, and with his help the Vell-os race were freed from their restrictive collars. No longer enslaved, they left Federation space, hoping to never be involved with the Bureau or the Federation again, and for many years they prospered in their new-found peace. But the vast network of their group telepathic mind kept them continually aware of the worlds and peoples they had left behind.

      The Rebels, nearly destroyed by the Federation and the Bureau, continued to seek ways to attack the Federation and defeat the Bureau, but they worked alone. The Aurorans were yet again attempting a unification of the Five Houses in the hope of a final bold attack on the Federation and the rest of known space for ultimate domination. The Polaris, having endured multiples attacks by the Federation and the brutal Aurorans, were readying their new fleet of powerful ships and weapons for a surprise attack on the Federation and the Aurorans.

      Unable to ignore the unfolding situation, the Vell-os tried to contact the Rebels, hoping to join them in their struggle against the Federation and the Bureau; they were attacked by the Rebels because of the Vell-os’ instrumental role in the fight against the Rebels by the Federation. Vehemel, in a bold and dangerous move, landed alone on Rebel II; he was captured—offering no resistance—and eventually was able to explain how the Vell-os had been enslaved, and their shared hatred of the Bureau and the Federation. An alliance was formed, and the Vell-os and Rebels began to work together.

      Vehemel and General Smart could see that before their alliance could successfully attack the Bureau, they needed much more information about their current technology, disposition of forces, and if possible, long-range plans and strategies; a fleet action against the Bureau succeeded in capturing seven Federation Carriers, and they inserted Rebels for spying. The work went well, for a while, until one Rebel-controlled Federation Carrier landed on Wolf 359 to learn more about the Bureau.

      During that time, a robbery occurred in the shipyard, and a discontented trader went to the carrier, ready to complain to the captain about the low security in the area. Going on board, he discovered information about what the Rebels had retrieved about the Bureau. He reported his discovery to the authorities—in the vain hope that he would be rewarded for his finding—and before long, the Bureau knew that not only were the Rebels spying on them, but also the fact that the Vell-os had formed an alliance with the Rebels.

      The Federation relentlessly hunted down the Fed Carriers, and as they captured them, the Rebel-Vell-os alliance lost five years of information they had acquired about the workings of the Bureau and the Federation. One Carrier escaped into Rebel space, and the Federation continued to escalate their war against the Rebels for the next ten years. The Rebels and Vell-os were nearly destroyed, and Vehemel’s plans to undermine and finish-off the Bureau seemed more out of reach than ever before. As Rebel II was destroyed, and as many of the Rebels escaped to Rebel I, he found the inspiration for a new plan that would destroy the Bureau for once and for all.

      The Federation, stymied in its quest to eliminate the Rebels and the Vell-os, turned its attention to the growing threat from the Aurorans. The Aurorans were in high morale, having won several key battles, and the Federation thought that if the Wild Geese could attack the leaders of the Five Houses, the Aurorans would be weakened. At first the Wild Geese declined to do it, but when the Bureau threatened them, the Wild Geese unwillingly performed the task. In the guise of unassuming traders' ships, they landed on each of the Five Families' capital planets and attacked the leaders. By the time the Wild Geese escaped, only two of the original five leaders of the Five Houses were left. The Federation celebrated this victory.

      The Polaris were readying their fleet for attack on the Federation and the Aurorans, when an amazing discovery was made. On the ice-cold planet of Vrenna, Polaris scientists found an actual male dragon, who was nearly dying. Having placed the creature in a cryo-sleep, the scientists began to study its DNA, and realized that there were enough similarities between the dragon’s DNA and Polaris to make a hybrid possible. A Polaris researcher was willing to be the surrogate of this experimental union, and as a result she gave birth to two creatures, one male and one female. They resembled the Polaris, but had a pair of smaller dragon’s wings on their backs: they were dubbed “Dragonoleovans.” The Polaris government found them to be exceptionally good spacecraft pilots, and decided to keep this first genetically engineered race as slaves, whose sole job was to destroy their enemies and help them to keep the universe under control.

      With the death of three of the five leaders of the Five Houses, the Aurorans were plunged back into war against each other. The Moash launched an attack against the very weak Vella; their victory—and the genocide of the Vella that followed—left them the greatest threat to any other enemy or Family. The Five Families were now Four. At the same time, Auroran explorers discovered habitable planets far south of Auroran space, but the military government saw no strategic use for them, and the discovery was quickly forgotten.

      Vehemel saw the time was right to execute his plan to defeat the Bureau. He successfully led small fleet into Federation space, and captured the Federation Carriers again; but this time the ships were loaded with explosive charges. Once again, the Rebels pretended to be Federation soldiers and landing on Wolf 359, performed one of the era’s most memorable events: the Rebels' Revenge. They destroyed dozens of Federation ships and set the explosives to destroy the Bureau Headquarters. When morning arrived, they detonated the charges, killing everyone except Commander Krane, who rushed to the spaceport to make her escape. Vehemel, hiding in the hold of a Carrier, destroyed her by using his Winter Tempest. The victorious Rebels returned to their space, joyous in their victory over the Bureau.

      The Polaris Invasion began as the Federation was still recovering from the loss of the Bureau chief, and as the Aurorans were trying to recover from the loss of their leaders. Many were no match for the Polaris fleet, and the 20 year war that followed left a greatly reduced military presence with the loss of most of a generation of soldiers on both sides. The Polaris, using a deadly new ship with Wraith technology, were able to hold back the Federation with their diminished force; their hopes of destroying the Federation shattered.

      At Rautherion Powers, scientists decided to follow the Polaris' idea of studying the Wraith. Unlike the Polaris, these scientists were seeking ways to create new weapons based on Wraith technology, such as the Etheric Wake Missile. The scientists journeyed to the Wraith homeland and studied the unique defensive beam the Wraith emits. When a sample of the beam was taken, the researchers found a very small amount of cyfiodic acid in the beam. Cyfiodic acid, as the scientists quickly discovered, was a liquefied form of cyfiodic gas, easily found in gas giants like Jupiter. When tested on Polaris organic armor, the cyfiodic acid melted before them in seconds.

      Pyrogenesis Corporation was charged with harvesting the cyfiodic gas and converting it into its acid form; entire uninhabited planets became huge factories and storage facilities for the acid. Meanwhile, Rautherion Powers created the Acid Lancer with a large cylinder storing its ammunition of cyfiodic acid. The weapons developers found that the cyfiodic acid in the cylinder wasn't enough to greatly damage Polaris ships. Rautherion made another advance in weapons technology when they created the acid compression pump, which forced a stream of highly pressurized acid into the reactive chamber of the Lancer, creating a weapon of extraordinary destructive potential.

      The weapon would be known through history. Arachnids, Scarabs, even Ravens burned up before the eyes of Commodores and Admirals of the Federation Navy at the might of the Acid Lancer and its cyfiodic charges. Since the Lancer was heavy, however, Rautherion Powers had to manufacture a ship that could carry Lancers as standard weaponry. They developed the infamous and still used Aztec Cruiser, which mounted two of the Lancers its main projectile weaponry. The Polaris Invasion in Federation space ended with the only mark of this attack being the incompletely destroyed organic parts of Polaris ships floating in space.

      The Aurorans got off somewhat worse. Because of their aging technology, and the fact that the Heraan were the only ones who were interested into technological advances, the Aurorans had to fight them off in ships like the Thunderforge. It took even longer to take out the invaders than it took for the Federation: the Feds finished them of in 20 years, and the Aurorans needed 30.

      The Aurorans became known as the Spartans after this war because they sacrificed their lives for mercilessly killing any Polarans who dared attack them. But their lack of interest in new technology left them building another vast fleet of out-of-date ships for the next war against the Federation

      The remaining Polaris force returned to Polaris space, where they slowly rebuilt and planned for another fight, another day. They found themselves greatly challenged by the now large population of enslaved Dragonoleovans, and a great rift grew between those Polaris who thought the Dragonoleovans should be set free, those who believed they should be kept as slaves—perhaps with new duties, and those who wanted them exterminated

      The Federation continued to be the dominant military force in known space, but they had not learned from past mistakes, and became lazy once again. Some members of the new military were able to quietly pressure members of the government to begin allocating undefined funds for the creation of a new “Investigative” branch of the military

      The Rebels rebuilt Rebel I, Rebel II, and their newly captured planet on Scheall. Without a home world, the Pirates traveled further throughout space than they had before, and it was rumored that they had made an alliance with the Houseless Warriors on Kipa

      Although it was commonly believed that the Vella were entirely destroyed, some wondered if they had a small colony on one of the as yet unexplored southern-most habitable planets in Auroran space

      Vehemel lived to a great age, and the stories of his deeds lived on for centuries beyond his lifetime. Some Vell-os lived among the Rebels, others wandered from planet to planet. There were stories that some traveled beyond the galaxy. And every now and then a trader would be overheard telling stories in a bar about something happening on the planet Vellos

      And five hundred years from now? What then? Will we ever know
