    • I've now played the first few levels and I must say it is a very well done plug. Great job to all involved.

    • Offhandedly, I'd say it's a great plug. Job well done SA.

    • Thanks man. Your suggestions helped a heap- there wouldn't have been a heavy cruiser without your insufficient firepower comment- I'm pleased with the final product.

I'm also happy that FoP is rating as the best plug at the moment. Now, shall we take bets on how long it will be before the idiots who did in your plug's ratings do the same to mine?

    • The power of us sensible players shall be a counter-active to those idiots! Goes off and gives FoP a 5

So SA, now that Footsteps is done, what is in store for the Ares community?

    • Well, I'll probably put together some multiplayer levels using the Chi'uata. That may take a little while, since I'd prefer to make them interesting levels rather than boring ones. Apart from that... well, my plans are vague at the moment. Though mucking about with FoP might yield some clues.

    • I have a non-static IP 😉
Anything goes seriously wrong, I'll have to fix it.

Haven't downloaded it yet (released while I was away), but I've seen little graphic snippets of it on the ASI site, and I can't wait.

As for multiplayer levels, there's absolutely no reason they can't be interesting. There's no reason you can't make levels similar to ones in the game somehow. Captivating could as easily be multiplayer as singleplayer if you space the planets appropriately and make the center planet neutral. Duality (one of my concepts I passed along to Patrick) has some cool stuff worked in.
Really, the only limit involves "Subject is player," but it's not too hard to avoid it.

great plug SA. I was a little dissapointed when i saw ares gfx in there but it DOES go with the story so whatever :p. I like that weapon on the battleship, very cool. But my version crashes before i can finish the last level, has anyone else had this problem?

So why cant i do it?

    • Foosteps of Pyrrhus. Er, yeah. OK plug except that halfway through level 13 I got an "unexpected request to load a sprite" error, which then dragged down my Mac with a type 10 System error (which never happens in Ares...!?). Not much good if you're trying to win a war.
I know that every plug will have its bugs, but surely your testers should have picked up this one, it being so major and all... Have them shot immediately!
Bug specifics: Occurred after the Battleship was in play. HVD had just been destroyed and three Sal carriers were approaching.

      ------------------
Oh, so it is another bug hunt then...

    • Type 10? I thought that was when a 68K tried to execute PPC code, but I could be wrong.

There are many routines in the Macintosh ROM that can be called by placing instructions in a program that aren't in the 68000's vocabulary. When the 68000 encounters such an instruction, it looks it up in the instruction table. This table gives the location of routines paired with each instruction. If it finds an entry in the table for the instruction, it branches to the routine. If there's no entry for the instruction, you see one of these errors.

It seems to be a 68k error, you may be right.

    • Just took it up into the 90s.
I played the first four levels, and I'm afraid your level 4 hint is a little too cryptic for me (or I need more sleep, especially with school starting in 2 days...). By "sensors" you mean what, and by "check" you mean where? I think "Empty Space?" should have "CanBeDestination" unchecked as well.

--Did I forget to mention the Splash screen? It's way too cluttered.
--Stick the ASI logo to the left of the Ares logo, Slugsoft to the right,
--your logo (biggest) in the upper left corner, and keep the majority
      --of the area free.

    • Damn. This error must have slipped in during the last couple of additions. I suspect Ares is trying to load a set of initial objects twice, now I need to track down where it's doing that. Any particularly masterful Ares coders, feel free to take a peek at Level 13's condition scripting to see if you can grab it.

Pallas, the hint is for you to watch the scanner in the top left- you should see a clue there as to where to head. And as for the empty space- I'm afraid that that has to be a destination, since that's the only way to make sure the computer clusters properly.

As for the title screen, I know it's cluttered. Unfortunately, this is needed since Ares crops the image on smaller screens, and the logos etc must be displayed fully.

Pyro- FoP isn't a total conversion. No doubt there'll be plenty of those out shortly. And yes, I love the Quark Cannon too. 😉

    • Well, after much searching, I have uncovered the problem. I requested Ares to load 12 consecutive initial objects when only 10 were available in sequence. Oops. Well, the problem is solved, and I'm 99% sure that's that. You can grab the updated Footsteps of Pyrrhus (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/cgi-bin/vftp/admin.pl?product=ares&category;=scenarios&display;=date&file;=Footsteps of Pyrrhus.sit.Bin")here(/url), and hopefully there will be no further updates needed.

Incidentally, I'm rather pleased. I managed to update the file without having the ratings reset, as I thought would happen.

Are you sure on that? In WITV, I use things called nothing for that, and they can't be destination.
