    • Landing picture distortion

Strange things are happing with me

This is what resulted when I tried to import a landing picture I made in Terragen into a Nova Plug using EVNEW

      Messed Up Picture

As you can see most of the picture is fine, it is just the clouds that have become distorted when I played.

When I view the pict resource in EVNEW it looks fine, only when I land in Nova does it become distorted. I have asked a similar question on ev-nova.net, and it was decided that it was probably something to do with terragen outputing in millions of colours and Nova only wanting thousands. I would like a second opinion before try to figure out how to have Terragen render it with a lesser resolution.

    • Yep, it's probably because of EVN using 16-bit color, and not doing a terribly good job of converting it itself. Were you on a Mac, I'd tell you to use BlitZen (a w00tware tool) on it...since you're not, I'm not sure what to recommend. Last I knew, Photoshop didn't do a particularly good job, either, using pattern rather than random dithering, with no option to pick which kind to use, since 16-bit color isn't one of its standard color spaces; I was only able to convert to it by saving a 24-bit image into a file format that allowed me to select 16-bit output. That doesn't mean it's not possible to do well in Photoshop, of course - just that I don't know how. 😛

Sooo...if you have access to any image editors that allow you to convert to 16-bit color with good results, try that.

    • I have a Mac that I could try it on. Is Blitzen OSX native because I don't have 9 installed at all?

    • All the w00tware tools (except NovaTools) are OSX-native.

    • Just a note- if you continue to use the word 'distortion' in the future, a large number of people will continue to think you're talking about real image distortion, where your image has been stretched or skewed. Just say something like 'issue with image colors' or 'ugly color bands in image' or something like that.

I'll play around with landing images and tell you what I come up with.
