Using ShipWrite, I modified a ship to have over 800 tons of outfits installed, plus 210 free mass. When I bought the ship, I only had 130 tons free mass. I tried removing one of the outfits which weighed 20 tons, and found that when I bought the ship again, I had 150 tons of free mass.
Did I hit a free mass limit? What exactly is the limit?
I have 120 tons of cargo space in this ship, if that matters.

The max would be 930? I've never tried these limits, so I don't know. Could you attempt to make a ship without any outfit nor weapon and 1000 of freemass?

As a first step toward diagnosis, I'd try removing all ammo (incl. fighters) from the ship resource in your plug, then buy it again.

I've done far worse -- didn't I once blow a question regarding the Plasma Siphon even though I was hosting the fix on my own site?

In any case, a ship's free mass is stored as a 2-btye signed integer, so it can range from -32768 to 32767.

Your total mass is the total of the mass of all default weapons plus the free mass. The mass of default outfits uses up your free mass so I'm guessing you have 80 tons of default outfits and only 720 tons of default weapons.

I did have bronev plating on the ship as default, so if that takes up 60 tons, then that would explain why my free mass is 60 tons less than I set it to be. Thanks.
