    • Use of Lightwave

I've been slowly learning how to use the recently aquired lightwave, and I've figured out some with the help of others. I've constructed a ship that I wish to post on photobucket, but I don't know how to extract the image. I know I can open Lightwave and open the object file from modeler, I've already done it. But I can't get it off Lightwave and onto something like Picture Veiwer or Graphics Converter. Can anyone tell me how to acomplish this? Also, I can't figure out how to add textures to the ships for the life of me.

    • Textures is accomplished by selecting the desired polygons, and pressing (q) to give it a surface. After that you can do lalala by going to the surfaces tab. Picture textures are added simply by clicking the (T) next to the color field of your surface.

To render a picture out, you need to open Lightwave Scene editor, load your model, go under render options, click (save RGB) and then name your file. To render and save your image now simply press (f10), or (render scene) under the render options tab.

But when you do that, don't forget to change your rendering frame range. Don't render the default 1 to 60 because that's just a waste of time. Change it from like 1 to 1. I usually go into the render options to turn on radiosity and then I press (F9) or (Render Frame).

    • When I press q. Let X be a checked square, and O be an unchecked square.

      ------------------------------------------
      l______________Change Surface___________________l_____OK
      l__O__Make Default______O Set Initial Color_______l_____Cancel
      l_____Color___200__200__200___________________l
      l_____Diffuse____100.0% ________________________l
      l_____Specular___0.0% ___________________________l
      l______________O__Smoothing____________________l
      --------------------------------------------

This is what I get after selecting the polygons.
NOTE: Everything below "Make Default" and "Set Initial Color" I cannot change. It is gray and staying that way. Set Initial Color is the same, I could check Default though.

::EDIT::Why can't things work right the first time?

    • You have to change the name of the surface for the options to become activated.

    • Thank you, it worked. I can change the colors of the polygons I select. Now how do I load textures from outside the program. Like a texture one makes in photoshop?

      ------------------
      Prime...Awacins

    • I told you that in an email a while ago.

    • Yes, but its not working. And I still don't know how to load the image from the outside. I can change the color and everything sure, but I can't actually load a texture into the program.

      Prime...Awacins

    • So, I'm assuming you have a texture map that you want to use?
1.Open up the Surfaces Editor, and click on the surface that you want to edit.
2.Click on the little box with the T next to color (or whatever you want to use the map for)
3.Make sure that the Layer Type is image map
4.Click on the menu where it says image: (none), at the bottom of that list click on (load image) (the menu will eventually list all the images that you have loaded, but right now there should only be two options - (none) and (load image)).
5.Once you click load image, it should open up a menu, go find your image!

If you need help with the actual texturing and mapping part look at the link in my sig.

    • Ummmmmm, I've done that. its never loaded the image before...I assumed there was something else I had to do. Does it have to be a photoshop file or something? I'm trying to load the texture from picture veiwer.

      ------------------
      Prime...Awacins

    • um... it can be pretty much any type of image file. I don't get what you mean that you're trying to load an image from picture viewer. What type of image is it? psd, jpg, png, etc.

    • JPEG file, its opened with a Mac OS X program called picture veiwer.

I've also changed the format to jpg and gif with a program called graphics converter, But it wont seem to use them either.

    • it doesn't matter if you can open it in picture veiwer... you just need to have the file saved somewhere. I think you're doing something wrong, because this should always work. Check your manual - that thing rocks.

Oh, and you've said that you don't know how to render your ship out into an image. Here's how.
      1. Open the object in Layout (you'll have made it in Modeller. Lightwave is two programs)
      2. Set up the scene how you want it.
      3. Go to the render menu - on the left, third button down.
      4. Click "render options"
      5. Make sure that the render display is Image Viewer
      6. Go to the render menu and click "render current frame"
      7. Once it's done, another image should pop up behind it. You can click abort in the rendering progress window at that point.
      8. In the top left corner of the image viewer there is a button that says "File", click that, and Save RGBA in the format that you want.

    • No manual, I bummed it off one of my dad's employee's. If I had it, I'd probably be spending my time memorising it rather than asking you guys stupid questions that would DEFINATLY be in the manual.

Yea, but it might be for 8. Although now that I think about it, texturing hasn't really changed between 7 and 8.

Do you have the CD? If you do, the entire manual is on it in PDF form. Though it's much nicer to have it in paper form if you ask me... Good luck printing 1078 pages. 🙂

I'm curious, how did you bum it off someone? Did they give you their dongle or are you using a (illegal) crack?

    • You can use cracks? He just gave me the CD and wronte instructions down. I followed them and vwala. That's basically it. And if its on the CD, I certainly can't find it. Though it may be the fact that the CD is a copy.

    • so, you're using a pirated version and you don't have a dongle.

If it's not telling you that it's running in demo mode, and you don't have a dongle (a little thing you stick in a USB or serial port), then it's pirated. The only way to run it without a dongle is with an illegal crack that lets you get around the need of a dongle and liscense key.
