    • Engine Power

Would anyone happen to know how engine power scales as size increases? Or reactor output as size scales? (For engines, I mean both chemical combustion ones, jet, and rocket engines.)

    • I don't know about jet engines, but for chemical combustion/rocket engines, the power goes up with the amount of propellant and oxidizer burned per unit time, and that rate depends on the amount of exposed surface area of the two chemicals. So, the engine power should go up with the two-thirds power of its mass or volume, but I'm not 100% sure that this is how it actually works.

    • Since the engine only allows for outfits prices/mass to be proportionnal or not to ship mass, you should go for it, it is reasonably close.

    • Masamune and I were discussing Sephil Saga's implementation of 'ship-building' and he has each engine produce power depending on the weight class of each ship. I'm concerned about how reactor output and engine thrust scale when you increase their size and hence mass. If it scales linearly, then there would be no need for a complicated system of weight classes. But then I would still have to put in variants of each engine so that if a warship captain didn't want to use 400 tons of expansion space for a 500accel and 700max speed engine he doesn't need. And that's assuming the larger ships even have that much space. Notice the dilemna?

    • Assuming it scales linearly isnt too bad an assumption. Power scales slightly above linearly with mass, most likely, mass scales with mass, so....

The real problem is the fact that if M<100 outfit mass is calculated as if M=100.
