I've been trying to add ships that start to slow down when you hit the down key (like the vell-os and the raven) but even when i look at the ships, i can't seem to be able to find out how they do it. can someone please explain how to do it. if its not possable can you explain why its imposable.

In the shďp resource, check the "Ship is inertialess" flag. (N.b., that's the name for the flag in the Nova Bible. I don't have an editor that runs natively in Panther installed; actual flag name many vary.)

There is no inherrant name for any given flag beyond what the bible gives. The flags are stored as bits in a hex value - thus, the only identifier is thier position. It is up to the editor's developer to decide what to name them.
All I have seen are variants on the word "inertialess"/
