    • Windows MakeSPIN

Is there a program for Windows that performs the same function as Makespin?

    • Basilisk II.

    • What Asterisk II didn't mention is that Basilisk II does not make spins. It is a mac emulator on which you run MakeSpin. For Nova, however, MakeSpin will not work because all ships were rendered at an angle, so ships would look weird. For EV and EVO, you'll be fine.

    • I am well aware that Basilisk II is an emulator, it is also a 68k emulator.

But, ships do not -have- to be rendered at an angle. They -can- be rendered up-down, yes?

Yes, they certainly can if you like.

Note that the result won't look very nice next to normal nova ships, though.

    • Well while not very automatic... You can make them easy enough in a good paint proggy like Photoshop. You just need to set up guides or grids and bring each frame in and place it in order. While it is not as easy as an automated process it works well.

    • Hrmm... a few questions:

      1. What degree are the Nova ships angled at, and on what axis?
      2. So you mean, place the ships manually in photoshop? Bleh, 72 frames.

      ------------------

    • 1: I have my ships horizintal in the x/z axis and then raise the move the camara in the y/-z axis an even amount. Then I pitch the camara down 45 degrees to the ship. Then I rotate the ship in the y axis clockwise.

2: Yes it takes a bit of work but it does work and can be done on a PC without an emulator or anything special.

    • For placing the sprites, the "proper" procedure is to make a movie (QT .mov format) with as little compression as possible of the ship spinning at double the size you want for the sprite. Then run it through a mac program that will propably never be ported and wont run on an emulator called M2S, which converts a movie into an image with all the frames laid out, still at double size. Then shrink that to half size in photoshop and then put it into a plug (going through the enrle thing on a mac, or just importing on a PC). The whole render at double size then shrink thing is called LASIK, and is why the nova sprites look so darned good.

It seems my mac is running, in some sense of the word atleast, now, so i can M2S things for PC devers.

I was pretty sure there's an Unsharp Mask filter in there somewhere to do LASIK.

Yep, right before you shrink it. If you just shrink it, it defeats the purpose. 🙂

EDIT: If you're curious as to how useful the LASIK technique is, take a look at this:
      Posted Image
Just an oval-ish sphere with a random texture applied, but it illustrates the difference.

EDIT2: Alright, it doesn't quite defeat the purpose; it does give some more detail, but for best results, do an Unsharp Mask.
