    • Sephil Saga Needs Server Space!

      Calling all server owners...

The Sephil Saga dev team has run out of space! We were storing all our stuff on Yahoo! groups, but we passed the 25 meg file limit a long time ago.

We're looking for a place to store the plug while it's in development. Hopefully, around 100 megs, with secure FTP access. Anybody have anything lying around that would fit the bill, and wants to help out a fellow developer?

P.S: This doesn't have to be the permanent place for the plug (ie, where to DL it once it's done), just a place we can stash it so that all the developers can access it while its under construction.

    • How much traffic will you be using? By secure FTP do we mean password access, or encrypted? How fast must it be?

    • Donate the space, or sell it?
Selling it for the final dl, or selling it until finished?

      Need more info

Also. do you mean for secure, as Kerberos, or clear text, for the FTP?

(Yes, I am a server owner, not some jackass 😄 )

I've got about 150 megs that you can use. I can have it set up as soon as you want.

    • You could also set up a hotline server or something... I know ASW used to (still does?) have one. It'd be handy for transfers, and it's password secure. Theres actually alot of good, legal stuff on hotline, like servers with samples (music) community groups and things like Meowx's server. The only problem is that it'ss overrun with all the other crap.

Still, I guess that's the way the internet's going.

You also might want to approach EVula about this, he provides a good service, he might be able to help you out...

      🙂

That's two plugs for EVula in one day. Jesus, I've been done over by the empire. 🙂

    • Our bandwidth requirements would be just about 0- this is just for the dev team's use, so we can put up our newest work and DL the latest plug version. By secure, all I mean is a simple password, to keep prying eyes out.

Thanks for the replies, I'll be emailing you all in the order you responded! 🙂

You do know that simply uploading and downloading still uses bandwidth? Wouldn't matter for mine, since I have close to 4GB of Bandwidth.

Yes, I do understand that- I'm just saying that the frequency of our transfers is very seldom. We're not swapping different versions of the plug around very frequently (maybe it's just our group dynamic).

In any case, our thanks go out to Mazca for providing exactly what we needed. Thanks to everyone else who offered as well! We should be set for the time being, though.

      Later y'all.

4GB divided by 100MB plugin = only 40 downloads. Not much really. 🙂

Except for the fact that they don't have 40 people in their group and the fact that the plug wont be at 100 megs for awhile. And like he said it is only occasional.

      So 4GB=plenty.

    • Actually, it won't be long until it hits 100 megs at this rate! It's about 70megs unstuffed right now, and has about 2% of the ship graphics put in, plus a few more landing and planet shots....

If you think about it, no it doesn't. They have 5 or 6 people in their group at the moment, but in some months it's entirely possible that two or three builds would come out (raising it to 10-18 downloads, already half your bandwidth allocation). And if they wanted to get a few outside people to give their opinion? Add another five downloads. Then think about the fact that some people will get halfway through their download and have to cancel it and retry for whatever reason - that still takes up bandwidth. Add another five downloads for that. And perhaps someone wants to test it on another computer and hence downloads it twice? Add a few more downloads and you've hit your limit.

    • Another aspect on my post above.

Think how much bandwidth is needed if you are actually going to release the plug to the public. Even if only 500 people downloaded it in the first month it was released - that's 50GB of bandwidth used up. I have about 40GB/month of unused bandwidth available to me at the moment that has been placed at this plugin's disposal, and even this would rapidly be used up if it was released and publicised while still on my server*.

It's worth thinking about just how useful the Addons page here at Ambrosia is when you release a big plugin. 🙂

*Obviously I know that this won't happen.

    • Thank you Mazca, for your generous donation. As stated above, the bandwidth usage is mimial - probably 5- 10 megs per person per week. Noe of us are working on every aspect of the plug, (i.e. I only work on about 20 MB of the total space - at least that's probably what it'll be).

Once we hit beta, it'll be a different matter. 100MB is probably a conservative estimate for the compressed size of the plug-in. It'll be a beta test on the scale of Nova, most likely. By that time, we hope to get some help from Ambrosia.

Yes, Sephil Saga is going to blow some stuff out of the water, including some elements of Nova. I'll see if I can get a screenshot or some other media to appease you hungry hoards. In the mean time, be patient! 😄

We'll have to put our friend Mazca on the credit list. Thanks again.

Sounds very impressive to me, good luck. As you can see, I still have sufficient bandwidth to handle a pretty extensive beta test when that time comes - it's only when you release it that you really need another arrangement. It certainly would be cool if you could get help from ASW, though.
