    • looking for texture/decal person

I'm looking for someone who can help me with textures/decals.

Note: I am a modeller and not best at decals and textures, if your wondering. I can do them, but i can never get an idea thats good.

So if you have some experience in photoshop etc. and can help out with decals and textures on ship and outfit models, please contact me.

My email is vortex@vortexnetwork.com, or just reply to this post.

    • Well frankly with practice you'll get better. That's the only way to do it, practice, and ask questions here. Really to get top quality texturing you need to do it on your own model, others can't really do it for you.

Just keep trying and you'll get there... I think Onyx and Meowx had some good tips on their pages. Linkage anyone?

    • Its not really the textures that much, but the decals. I just don't have the patiants for it. I can do them sure, but it gets too tedius half way through and i usually just scrap it because i lose track of layers or i just get bored of the look.

I am sure there are many ppl who can paint way better decals onto my models then i could ever hope to achieve.

Its really easy. I send them a top view of the ship, they draw stuff onto it and send me back the file, i apply the whole thing as a texture to the ship (and add mask so that only decal parts show) then i apply the metalmain surface

hell, somone could even print out an outline of the ship and draw it... in which case i could easily make it look good in photoshop.

basically, im just too lazy to make decals/designs for ships, so i need som1 to help out.

oh yeh, and most of the ships are for Oblivion TC. I might have a few personal ships for this or that as well

      any1 interested?

    • You haven't really provided all that much incentive for someone with the requisite skills to do this for you. someone who is good at this sort of thing is probably also an acomplished modeler, and would prefer to use his tallents on his own projects. I just cant see anyone wanting to do your tesxturing rather than working on their own projects.

    • Personally, i know lots of people who are accomplished in photoshop but dont know anything about 3D modelling.

    • Good texturing requires not only the ability to use photoshop tools, but an implicit understanding of 3d design. The two are not seperable.

    • I disagree... Someone who is profficient in photoshop and has played a few space-type games should be able to look at the top view of a ship and say "yeh it would be cool to have some windows there, and maybe a black line right there... and maybe a slightly darker patch there" without knowing about any 3D stuff. I can then take their photoshop file and use it as decal on my ship, then edit anything that doesnt turn out good.

This will often result in your models looking even more 'amateur' than if a 3d pro with no particular Photoshop skills made his own textures.

    • Pessimist is right, because you have to know how to map them so they fit on all the different shapes that you have in the model. It isn't simple a matter of painting a pretty texture and leaving it, there are many, many other factors. That said, you have to be a good modeller to make good textures, simply to know how to do things so they look right once you put them on the bits.

Yeah? It isn't simply aesthetic sense.

    • so... you want some artist to do your textures for you because they bore you? heh, no way. sorry man.

    • I think your all missing the point here. I am not very creative, and i can't get ideas for texutures. If someone paints a good texture onto a top view of the ship, i can tweak it to look nice very easily, but if i start from scratch, i allways loose the idea around half way through.

    • Ever heard of practice? That way you get better every time...

No one's going to do this for you, you have two choices, either persivere, or give up and do something else. Really there is no other option.

    • You are missing the point entirly.

I am not looking to improve in my skill in photoshop, i am looking for someone who can give me ideas for ship decals. I know enough about photoshop allready, its just a matter of someone who can get a good idea and draw it onto a picture of the model so that i can take that and edit it into a good working texture.

I dont need practise, no matter how much i practise, its not going to help me get ideas. I just need ideas for my models.

I do need someone who can give me ideas for decals that i can edit to fit the ship well.

Please read my posts correctly before trying to lecture me on practise and such.

    • Pick me! Pick me! I can't model for beans but I am godly in photoshop and illistrator.(well not godly but good enough) I really want to help make sure good plugins come out for EV Nova but don't have all the skills and time neccesary to do a whole TC myself. And I disaprove of what many people call plugins and would call most of them cheats. I am working with dimpfinator on another plugin which I hope will come to frutition but I would love to help on one more. I feel so sad when I look at the addons page for nova and remember all the great stuff there was for override. I will try to do what you ask me for as long as I have the capability and time.

No, you are wrong. It is a fact of life that no matter what, when you practice something you get better at it, even coming up with decal ideas. If you're too lazy to do it yourself, fine, but don't misinterpret what I'm saying. I'm not saying you need practice with photoshop or anything, but if you try painting decals, then paint another, and another, then you will get good at it. Even imagination can be practiced, all you need to do is try. You seem to have convinced yourself that you will never be able to do it, but that's just bull****, anyone can do it with practice. And I'm not talking about photoshop skills, I'm talking about practicing coming up with decals.

Personally I think you're just being too lazy to learn.

Also, painting decals directly onto renders of the ship is a bad idea, you should paint them in photoshop, fit them to the model's texture, then render it again, not paint it on as a last step. Otherwise it will look wrong, and not be affected by lighting and shadow, so it will look really wierd.

So have a go, then post the results on the image gallery to ask for help there, people are only to glad to help, but the initial effort has to be yours, otherwise you will never progress as a 3D artist.

I don't hold any illusions that you will take this on board, but I really wish you would. You're stuck in a rut that you can easily work your way out of... it's not that hard once you have a few tries. Look at other people's work on the web, copy existing ones for practice, combine shapes, things from flags, whatever. Without practice you will always rely on other people, and that is not a good thing.

Just read the above with an open mind, yeah? I'm not having a go at you, I'm trying to help. Take it from someone who has had the same problem. 😉

Azdara, could you discuss graphics with me via e-mail? I haven't heard from you in a while and I don't know if it's because you're busy, my e-mail's being stupid again, or you just don't have anything to say. I know you're devoted, but I'd like to hear from you again soon.

About decal practise. Your right and your wrong. Your right that practise will help, and your right that i am lazy but at the same time wrong. I am not lazy, its more that i have no time. I have school and i leave at 7AM and get back at 5PM, then i have to do school stuff for about 2 hours. This leaves me less then 6 hours a day, during which i like to do other things then computer as well. So 3 hours a day, i just don't have the time to practise decalling too much.

Not only that, i want to learn C++ (i got VC++ .net and BCB and i am still very pathitic at making things >phear the 1337 adddition and subtraction calculator ;)< ) I also want to practise my 3D stuff and also wedesign, and i am also learning PHP. This leaves me around -48 hours a day. Before school i usually slept every second day cuz i had too much i wanted to do, now with school, i have no time at all.

Any spare time i do somehow come across though, i will try and practise it. It can be #100 on my list of things to learn.

Alright, now that i read that posts it gets rid of the main arugument point i had. You thought i was rendering the thing, then painting textures onto it at very end, for eath of the 26 spins. What I meant was I was rendering a top view of ship, just a single frame, then painting decals on. Then i save it as a jpg. I then go into 3DS max and apply texture and mapping co-ords. Once this is all done i render it, and voila, the lighting and everything works!

UE: look at my texture post on oblivion page.

mercurywyrm: Email me: vortex@vortexnetwork.com i'd be glad of any help.
