    • Whats this mess of Computer Language?!?

When I open up a plugin that I wish to edit I go through all the way to where I should be getting the basic templates. But when I open these files it comes up with just tons of computer language like 0's f's and other numbers and odd looking symbols. What is going on and why can't I get the template like when I look inside the main Nova files at the planets and stuff?

    • Because either the templates have to be loaded into the plugin that you want to edit, or you have to have a plugin that already has the templates already open while you edit the non-templated plug. The easiest way is to get NovaTools, and install it. That way, every Nova plug that you open will have nice, pseudo-GUI editors. Or you could just go to Mission Computer and EVONE.

Actually, that's called Hexidecimal. Its not a computer language, its a numbering system used primarily with computers. It's a base 16 number system (our number system - 0 through 9 - is a base 10 number system and binary - 0 and 1 - is a base 2 number system). The characters 0 through 9 and A through F are used to represent 0 through 15. • Hex or Machine Code, as you like it. Don't try to read it, very very very very few people can, and they trained for many many years to learn how to interpret it. If you have the NovaTools plug for ResEdit (for Nova) or the TMPLs installed for EV/EV:O (just copy them over from the Sample Plugin that's provided with EV or EV:O), you shouldn't be seeing hex. After you get one of those, if you do hit hex, then you're very likely someplace you're not supposed to be, so it'd be a good idea to get out before you accidentally corrupt the file (I've done this before -- hit a key accidentally, that screwed up one little hex character, and killed the game).

Suddenly, the little scoutship disappeared and then reappeared right behind the alien warfleet. The gravitic ship's captain hailed the armada. "You are going to be destroyed, but I will give you a choice as to how you want to spend eternity: big pieces, little pieces, or quarks?"
      Dead silence.
      "Quarks it is, then."

    • You are probably best sticking with NovaTools, since it features advanced templates that are much more user freindly then the basic ones.

Also, its usually best to never mess with anything in you Nova Data files. That way, the worst thing you can mess up is you plugin. Of course, its usually good idea to back that up every so often. It's a pity ResEdit's Revert feature does not work, and it saves every time you paste something new in, as opposed to just when you hit Save.

There are times when basic templates (and even no templates) are more useful over the NovaTools ones. I find I use NovaTools to do the basic work and the basic templates to do more detail work. If I'm working on a EVN related application, I use no templates.

Yes, this means I have lots of copies of ResEdit laying around.
