    • Nova Control Bits question

What are the NCBs for the band transport, Kotnik probe, and cunjo hunt missons? I'm talking about the early missions you get every time you play that pay, like 50,000 each. If I've missed one, let me know.

I could hack the Nova files and find out myself, but I haven't played all of the strings yet and don't want any spoilers.

      Thanks in advance!

If you want the rest of shard let me know. There's also the terriforming missions but I haven't included them. Let me know if you want those as well.

    • What's Shard? Are those the missions with the old guy?

Anyway, I'm making a char that starts the player out with a Valk, but as punisment the player doesn't get to do the missions I mentioned. If he/she could, he/she would get a Starbridge rather easily...

Are there any other missions I should block? I don't want to interfere with any storylines.

    • Temmin Shard. He's the private investigator/spy for Heraan house. Those one's listed, along with the terriforming missions are the only minor strings. There's also the Wild Geese and Bounty Hunter lines but blocking these will prevent accessing major strings through them. I'll post any of those bits also if you like. If you want to block access to any of the minor strings, I'd probably set the OnRefuse or OnSuccess bits (OnRefuse should be sufficient).

    • Okay, I'm going to block Band 1 & 2, Probe, and Cujo 1. I never seem to get Cunjo 2, so I won't block it. To be safe, I'll use OnSuccess. That's about 200 k credits the player doesn't get.

I'm sort of assuming the player did those missions already and just picks up the game after getting a Valk. Is there some way I could give the player a small map when starting out? That would be nice... Of course, that's getting awfuly close to cheating for my taste.

    • Uh oh, I got the Cunjo hunt mission. Is Cunjo 2 a variation, or what?

The second part is just the second mission. The whole thing is made up of two missions. You shouldn't get the second part if the bits in the first one don't set. But there is a mission variation that I forgot about where you take part in the hunt. Let me see if I can track that one down and I'll post the bits.

A moment later: There doesn't seem to be any difference between the Cunjo hunt variations - only how often they show up. Check your plug and make sure that you're setting b7786. Also note that the OnSuccess field of the first Cunjo mission should read b7787 b7786.

    • You da man, Kame! And a Coloradan, too!

Okay, this is what I have in the Set field: b7778 b7779 b7781 b7787 b7786

Is this correct? I haven't tested the new version since I'm having too much fun with my pilot.

Yeah, I grew up in Boulder since I was 7 or 8 but have since moved on - still in CO though.

After looking at the bits more closely, just stick the OnRefuse bits. Setting those will prevent those missions from appearing again. The way you have it set up now, you're likely to be offered the second half of some of those missions.

The bits you set should be: b7777 b7780 b7786
That'll block the Cunjo hunt, the Kontik Probe and Ferry the Band missions.

    • I don't want to interferfe with any other plugs that might use those bits. If somebody plays with a head start pilot for a month and can't get a plug to work because I used RefuseBits, I'd be severely disapointed.

Oh well. Maybe this is a bad idea anyway. I just hate flying around in a Heavy Shuttle for two weeks just to save up creds for a Valk.

That's just the way plugs go. It's impossible to make every plug compatable. I would love for my plugs to be compatable with the Unity series (all of them together would just be great story additions to the existing game) but that's just not going to happen. The way I see it, if you're worried about someone making a plug that picks up from one of those missions (like a Kontik plug) and you're plug blocks it then they simply shouldn't use your plug. If you want to block a mission for some reason then the player will pay the consequences due to the decisions they made to make that mission blocked. It's not you're problem, it's the player's.

Just out of curiosity, what are you trying to do exactly? If you feel that setting all the OnSuccess bits is more appropriate then do it. You'll still have the same problem though with other plugs. If you block the Kontik mission by telling the game that it's already been completed, then the player may be thrust into a Kontik string without ever doing the first mission.

    • Hrm, here's an interesting idea for someone who knows how to program on a Macintosh. Create a program that will scan through all the plugin and data files and parse the NCB strings. It should make a big list of all the NCB's used in the default Nova scenario. Then, for any and all NCBs used in plugins that are NOT from the default scenario (i.e. new bits), reassign them so that the plugins are compatible. Write the new corrected bits out to the plugins with a replacement table. Then do the same thing with resource ID's. Any resource ID's from the original scenario would be left alone (they are supposed to replace something from the scenario), but any other ID's will be reassigned to be compatible. It would scan through all the resources that might point to the old ID's, and fix them (i.e. ship resources would still point to the correct outf even though it has a new ID). Finally, the program should be able to scan all the plugins and data files and let you find blocks of unused NCB's you can "allocate" to mission strings. Same with resource ID's. This would be a big project, but it would be extremely useful.

Good idea, and that would work for small plugs, but although there are many many ncbs available this time the real problem lies in the number of allowed missions. I may have just found out for myself that you can't go any higher than 1100 for the resource ID. Hopefully, I just botched my programming and reloading the wrong pilot. I was hoping the limit would be 1127 which would be an index ID of 1000. The plug I'm working on now to add to the original game already adds over 30 new missions and I'm not close to even half way through - more like a quarter. It'll be compatable with my last plug, Ronin, but making it compatable with something like MacDevil's entire Unity series is just not possible (as far as I know). There just aren't enough resource IDs to go around.

It's already been done. It's called MissionBitMap, and it's a w00tWare tool. It's Carbon, so it runs well on both Mac OS 9 and X.

However, I believe that MissionBitMap was only ever released internal to ATMOS. You would need to contact Ralph Sutherland to ask his permission to get the tool.

      all the best,

      Dave

ps. No, I can't give it to you. I'm no longer a member of ATMOS.

Actually, DrRalph did release MissionBitMap for Nova. See this thread: (url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/webboard/Forum9/HTML/002569.html")http://www.AmbrosiaS...TML/002569.html(/url) Unfortunately, the link that he gave in that thread is no longer valid and the MissionBitMap utility is not on the current w00tWare web site. rats
