    • just an idea for a new fun nova plugin... if any one likes please make it

when you start a new pilot all the basic weapons and outfits are kinda a let down, you don't really get to soup up a ship untill you are in a mission string. is it possible that there could be a new minor string about the size of sigma where you join a guild of hackers or scrappers, and by the end you develop a new skill where whenever you board a ship instead of just being able to steal credits, goods, energy or the ship itself you could take tech. this minor string would come with its own station or like in sigma its own area on a platet where you can take the tech. and have it fitted on to your ship for a pretty penny. Or maybve you could just scrap the ship steal the outfit (this way you can't take anything else from the ship or try to capture it when your done) and next time you land on a station with an outfitter you can have it istalled for a slightly less pretty penny. this way you could have a civilian ship with fun outfits or a string ship with outfits from other strings so some of us don't have to resort to cheating to get cloaking devices and bio lasers. i know I can't do this but if anyone out there likes the idea enought to try and make a patch i would be much obliged and you would be my hero 😄

    • Many have already come up with this idea, and I think its pretty much impossible with the Nova engine.

Yes it is very possible and as a matter of fact there's already a simple example of how to do it in the current Nova scenario. The përs resource named "Dr.Ralph" gives you a 10-jump map if you board his Star Liner. Here's the way this works:

      1. Create a group of përs resources, each of which has the "Grant" section filled in with class numbers that you'll assign to outfits in step 2.
      2. Make copies of all the outfit resources that you want to be able to scavenge from the përs ships when they are boarded. You have to modify the oütf copies giving them "Class" numbers that match the "Grant" info in the përs resources from step 1.
      3. Make copies of all the s˙st resources where you want the përs ships to appear. Add the përs resource ID numbers from step 1 to the përs resource section of the s˙st resources with a probability of appearance of 100%.

Now all you have to do is go to the systems where the "Grant"ing persons' ships are going to appear. Disable them, board them, and you will get the outfits that they are "carrying".

      This is a recording

    • Yeah, sure, if your entire universe is made of përses. I think what he wants is every ordinary ship to have tech you can "steal". That's what I was saying is "impossible".

My thought was that a partial solution to the stated criteria was better than no solution at all. And consider this - there are 515 përs resources in the Nova scenario, only one of which makes use of the "Grant" functionality. Of the remaining 514 there are 203 that it would be bad ju-ju to board, leaving 311 existing përs resources that could be modified to grant something if they were boarded. It seems to me that any game-engine functionality that isn't fully utilized robs the user community of the full range of available benefits (be they positive or negative). Now I'm not suggesting that someone post such a plug-in on the add-ons page, since it would involve a sweeping number of scenario modifications, albeit simple modifications, to both the përs and oütf resources. But for the enterprising Nova user who wants to add a little customization for their own usage, it's a very doable project.

But even if you used all the Pers, wouldn't the player's ship need the ability to "use" the stolen hardware?

It sounds more like a small change to the "Sneakers" story, so that you attack specific ships and the result is to get a specific piece of hardware from that ship.

When the përs ship is boarded, the class outfit items defined in the përs resource are automatically granted (installed, if you will) into the player's ship. This is similar in function to the Gxxx NCB operator. Also I'm not suggesting that all 1024 possible përs resources be used up for this modification. Rather just a handful of new përs outfit granting ships scattered around the Nova universe or better still a modification of some (or many) of the 515 existing përs resources. This way every once in a while after boarding a përs ship you would get a pleasant surprise "gift" that could either be used or sold. The existing "refuel-me-because-I'm-too-stupid-to-land-on-a-planet" përs is a very good candidate for such a modification.

I agree with Arokito in that the rigidity of the Nova scenario vis'a vis access to the better outfits is somewhat stifling and that there are a variety of other methods that could be used rather than entering and getting locked into a major string.

      Google. It's a wonderful thing.

That sounds like "007 in Space" (not to the tune of "Piiiiigs iiiiinnnnn Spaaaaaace" or Moon Raker)

Besides, you would be looking for Pers ships instead of any nearby ship and there wouldn't be any "plundering" going on. Which I think was the initial intent.

One thought that comes to mind that uses what you suggest. Make an extension of the pirate storyline where you are sent on missions to attack specific ships.

Do they have to be in specific star systems?

"Go find the 'Blah' ship. It is testing the new 'anti-blah-blah' device return with it for your reward." You get to keep what ever else you find (which ends up being energy and money).

    • Hmmm...

If you wanted to do it via a mission string, you could just have a mission like so:

1 ship passes through X system
      2 player disables and boards
3 the cargo is 'X outfit'
4 player returns, and in the text it says that the new outfit/tech has been installed onto the player's ship. It's been done many times in a normal story, in fact.

But only if it was mission based.

Uh, I beg to differ. If you're playing the Fed storyline, for example, and you are sent to disable, board, and analyze the tech on board a series of Rebel ships (Reb. Viper, Lightning, Thunderhead, Valk, Starbridge, Destroyer, and Dragon), and you are rewarded with the capability to buy those ships, BioRelay Lasers, Wraithii, and various engine and shield enhancements (taken from tech used in the Rebel ships, of course), then you're gonna be pretty happy, aren't you? Screw the fact that a BioRelay Laser is worth 200,000 creds easy in Fed space, and that it frees up 15 tons of space, it's the best non-ammo- or -fuel-based primary weapon in the game. Same goes for the Wraithii launchers, being the best secondary weapon. Outfit a Class V Rebel Valk with BioRelays and Wraithii, and there ain't too much short of a true Polaris vessel that can stop you.

That would more than awesome! Rebel Dragon is better than a Fed Carrier. BioRelays are indeed the best primary weapon in the game. Wraithii is good too, but havent been able to try it too much yet. And the upgraded shields... we even faster ships! This is so awesome I want you to write a string where this happens. Now.

    • I think ship resources have a 'On Capture' NCB field. Entering a Gxxx or anythign else within that field could be used to grant you something if you board a certain class of ship, person or not.

Yet I haven't eventried this field, so I don't know if it triggers when you board the ship or only when you take it as your own.

Instead of asking some one to make it for you, why not generate interest, see if anyone would like to team up with you on it, and then have a collaborative effort? Makes more sense to me, and it's more likely to get done that way.
