Hey folks.

I was thinking itd be cool to run a ship building competition for the boards, in which everyone could submit a design, and we could all vote acordingly at the end. I was perhaps thinking along the lines of 3 catagories, ranging from small (ie fighters) > medium (ie destroyers) > large (ie crusiers). Im not sure how much intrest this would get, so im really just bouncing the idea around here. If it dosent get much respone ill try posting in the main Nova forums. Obviously the more people we rake in the better. And the uh, prize, um... prestige?

Sure, I'd say it's about time we had another ship competition. The last one didn't end up taking place, and I missed the one before that...

A word to the wise: make sure to thoroughly organize it. The first one, by Ralph and Roger, was extremely well set-up and had almost no problems. The second (by...don't remember who) was quite informal and had few entrants, and people were asking questions and wanting clarification every other post. So, draw up some rules, how to enter, how it'll be judged, and a webpage about it, and to host the entries, and you'll be pretty well-off.

Make sure the deadline is such that we've got a nice and long working period.

It might be a cool idea to collaborate with the Ships of the Webboard plugin, too.

Maybe for you, but my ship isn't the best thing I've done; it would be alright with me if I could do anything I wanted.
Anyway, I'm all for this idea. Most of my past ships have been, er, less than mediocre, so this would give me a chance to really try hard.

Or do you mean sending the models in?

Naturaly, a ship compitition would be cool. Of course it always makes me feel bad to see how bad i am compared to others...

I was really thinking along the idea of a 3d render, not sending an actual model in, of course it might be a cool idea to compose a plug in of the top 3 entries of each catagory afterwards perhaps.

The 3d render im guessing could show the ship in any way you want, either as a techical piece, with 4 viewpoints or something, or an actual scence. It might be an idea to restrict the render size for entries, such as a maximum of 1000x1000 pixels, alowing for more design freedom, rather than having a wider and shallower render size.

How would mid January sound to people for a nice deadline for entries? or is this to sson/far away?

I wasn't planning to be interested, but since we're going to have some fellow POV-Ray users, I might just have to LAY A SMACK DOWN! Heh.. Just kidding. However, I am still interested.

A cinematic shipayrd shot, or just a techincal style render, really its up to how each person want to show off their entry. Im going to draw up some rules and get some feedback on them later today.

Beta Rules - Subject to change

• 3 catagories for entry (note: only 1 entry per catagory):

Small ships (ie fighters/shuttles)

Medium ships (ie destroyers/gunships/frigates)

Large ships (ie crusiers/carriers)

Entries submited in jpg form, no larger in pixel dimentions of 1000x1000. You could for example split this into viewports, and show several angles of the ship in the same image. Or, just show a shipyard style scene.

There are no restrictions as to style and method of creation, ideally all submission should have been generated in 3d, since this allows for the possibility of porting them to a plug. Although saying this, I cant see why 2d entries shouldnt be allowed.

Deadline for submission January 15th

Ive not yet decided on how we're going to display the entries, either through a site, or through posts on the boards. If anyone is also willing to help me work on organising all this, itd be much appreciated, since I cant devote as much time as I probably should.

This is of course just a draft.

Another thought, in the event of not a huge amount of entries, catagories would probably be merged, and those who had entered a design for each catagory would be forced into choosing a single entry. Or should we just have 1 catagory anyway?
