    • [EVN] Map Size Limit?

Is there a size limit for the map? I ask because the area available in EVO Developer's Map is so much larger than ThorPrime's NovaMap program -- the map I've created in the former doesn't fit in the latter.

And, if so, how large is it?

    • I don't believe there is a map size limitation, but there is a 2048 system limit.

    • I certainly am not aware of any limit to actual map area. As Mantaray said, there is only a number of systems limit.

"I expect you'd like to know about frogmen?"

    • I, too, would like to say that I don't know of any limits for the size of the map. As Mantaray and Mazca both have stated, there is a system limit of 2048.

      😛

On a more serious note, it seems to be a limitation of the NovaMap program, and does not reflect the actual game.

    • I know of a max coordinate: 32767 and min: -32767. This is the largest number that can be inputted in 2 bytes. 7FFF in hex. Hope that answers you.

    • I was going to correct that....

      ------------------

    • EVONE can currently render systs with coordinates between 5,000 and -5,000. Since it is simply a random value defined in a header file, I guess I should change it to the max allowed (the corrected values given are right). I was keeping it relatively small because it makes it much easier to scroll (imagine the scroll bars scrolling through ~65,355 values).

Edit: It now supports coordinates between 15000 and -15000, which I am hoping is enough. I experimented with the limits, but scrolling with the scroll-thumb becomes extremely difficult (you can still click and drag the map or use the scroll arrows). Comments?

Edit again!: To give some perspective to this, the largest coordinate in the EV Nova map is 587. A max of 15000 and -15000 would fit a map almost 64 times that of Nova.

    • Well, you can try it out in EVONE, the PB should be released within the week. If it doesn't work, perhaps Jeffrey could increase the limit to suit your need before the final release. Could you go into EVO Dev Map and see what one of the farthest-out coordinates you have used is? Or is it not done yet?

    • Oh, yeah, that's not a problem at all -- in fact, I've been using EVO Developer's Map to work on this the whole time, but I've finally reached the EVO number of sË™sts limit (half that of EVN) and I easily have two hundred or so more to add (before the book Star Charts came out, I could fit just about every system I could find in my research into an EVO plug and still have room to spare for sË™sts which changed gövt's).

Why not make it so that the map area shown is simply the map area used, with a border of, say, 50-100 units? That would allow anyone who wants an enormous map to create one, as well as making scrolling through most maps simple.

      It's just an idea...

    • Or maybe he could put a Map Size option either in the preferences or the Galaxy menu. Hrm...

I don't know why anyone would use the thumbs anyways, I usually just click above or below the bar, and have the page jump down, or just click and drag the bar to where I need it... Much faster that way. To each his own...

That's what I've found the most practical so far.

But what would happen if they wanted to place a system more than 100 pixels from the farthest one out? Also, what would it do? Grow the map every time a system was added to keep the border?

There are of course ways to scroll other than using the scroll-thumb, including using the scroll arrows or simply clicking and dragging a blank spot on the map. What I meant was that it has to scroll through so many values that moving the scroll-thumb a single pixel would shift the map completely out of view.

They would have to place it, then move it outward to the position it should have. (see the answer to the next question)

Yes. Every time a system would be moved to a coordinate in the border area, the map size would be recalculated. Sort of like the scroll bar on the right side of the message box when you're posting - everytime there is a new line, it's recalculated to take that into account.

    • Interesting idea and it actually should not be too hard to implement. I don't have time to work on it before the public beta is released (Monday), but I will certainly experiment with it when I get a chance.

Okay, I have 2 ideas on this subject:

      1. Do it like Nova and have various zoom levels.
      2. Separate the entire possible galactic area into "regions" of about 1000 pixels or so, and have some sort of minimap where the user can select which region of the map they want to edit.

      Would that be possible?

Agreed -- the same zoom levels as Nova would make for nebula graphics creation ease.

This would be nice, or something similar to Adobe's Navigator palette from their big three programs would be just as nice (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).

      1. Yep, its been in there from the beginning. EVONE supports the exact zoom levels EVN does, ranging from 42.1% to 237.0%.

      2. Interesting. It would definitely be possible, but I almost think one big map would be easier to use. A mini-map would be cool though.
