Ok, ppl here keep telling me that ResEdit is the best program to use for plugin editing, especially if you get the templates. But nobody tells me where the devil to get ResEdit Templates for EV and EVO. So where do I get them?

      CaptJosh

      ------------------

    • Have you tried looking in the add-ons pages on the EV and EVO sites? They are in there under essentials. Also, NOVA has its templates included in the documentation. I cant remember whether this is the same for EV/O as I dont have them installed any more.

    • Actually, I found it on pages that aren't even linked to from the rest of the site anymore, but are still there. You have to search from them from a search engine or know the URLs to type in.

      (url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/Products/Add_Ons/EV_AddOns.html")http://www.AmbrosiaS.../EV_AddOns.html(/url) and
      (url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/Products/Add_Ons/EVOverride_AddOns.html")http://www.AmbrosiaS...ide_AddOns.html(/url)

      Check them out.

But what I don't get is how the Webmaster for Ambrosia could be so incompetent as to orphan those pages. Then again, this isn't the best designed site I've ever seen. I could do better.

I think you owe the webmaster an apology. Those pages were orphaned entirely on purpose - they are the old design of the Ambrosia EV/O site, replaced almost exactly three years ago. The files (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/cgi-bin/vftp/show.pl?product=evo&category;=utilities&display;=date&file;=Override102Templates.sit") are available (/url) on the current site, so why should those horribly outdated ones be linked to?

Got any examples of how you could do better?

    • Quite frankly, there's a lot of wasted bandwidth with all the extra graphics. This is a website for a business as well as a game. It shouldn't take forever to load over dial-up. Furthermore, the orphaned pages are actually easier to use to find things. Didn't anyone ever tell the webmaster that if it aint broke, don't fix it. The current design makes it hard to find things. Also, there should be a search engine on the site to help people find things because of how un-streamlined the site is. And before you ask, yes, I think I could do better. Certainly it would take me some time, but I believe I could design a better basic site. Now the way the links are done on the addons pages I hadn't seen before, but I suppose it's a security measure to prevent people from other sites linking directly to the files here. In any case, I believe it is possible to redesign the site to make it simpler, more efficient, and easier to navigate.

Hell, they can give me the source code for the site and I'll take a crack at it. And if they do, include the orphaned pages, too, because I'm going to want all the stuff so that I can decide what to use and what to toss. Then I'll send it back, and if they like what I do, they can use it.

But I doubt they'll take me up on this, so I suppose it doesn't matter.

    • If you genuinely think you could do better, why don't you email Andrew Welch (andrew@ambrosiasw.com) and ask? It's worth a try.

If you really cared you could just download the whole site(better to only a chunck though) and do a redesign on spec. That's the thing about the web - everythings open for others to see and copy. So you don't need them to send you jack.

    • Both replies are a thought. If I do either, I better dig out my copy of Dreamweaver. This would be far to big a task to try doing all in notepad, as is my habit. Thanks for the advice.

Addendum, back on the subject of ResEdit: as far as ResEdit goes, it IS a lot easier to use with templates in place, but I can't open the EV Bible file with anything on my Mac Emulator. Any idea what format the file is? I need to know what program to get to open it with. I probably would have the prog I needed if I wasn't stuck with OS 7.5.5 right now. Oh well, I'm expecting to get a copy of OS 8 in a few days, which I can then upgrade to 8.1. No way to tell if that would give me the prog I needed. Anyway, if someone could tell me what type of file it is, I would appreciate it.

I think I've seen MS Word and plain text versions of it - either way, you should be able to read it on a Windows computer.

    • If it was plain text, it should open in Simple Text in the emulator, but it doesn't. I guess I'll drag the file into windows via hfv explorer. Thanks

    • Seems to me there's PDFs somewhere of each EV bible -- I know there's one for Nova -- but I can't for the life of me remember where I saw them.

    • A PDF version of the Bible for Override is available here: (url="http://"http://www.sutherland-studios.com.au/family/files/OverrideBible102.pdf")http://www.sutherlan...ideBible102.pdf(/url)

WickedDyno (Andrew Glasgow) had been working on a PDF for the original EV Bible, months ago; don't know if he ever finished.

    • Right now I'm playing with plugins for EV, not EVO. Figure I'll start simple, then work my way into the more complex stuff. I shudder to think how hard it's going to be to write a plug for Nova when I won't be able to use EVONE because it will only run on a PPC and the bes I can emulate is a Quadra. Last I heard on any PPC emu is a project I ran across on the web talking about having a PPC emu sometime in March.

Anyway, is there a PDF for the EV Bible? Which, by the way, I did pull into windows and look at in Word. Still, if it were in PDF format, it's not that hard to get acrobat reader for Mac.

    • Go look in the Add-ons page 'Guides' section (http://www.ambrosias...lay=date&page=1). I'd recommend the HTML one, even though there are a few errors in it's coding (nothing serious, just some messed up umlauts and stuff like that). But, of course, you can download whichever one you want.

      ------------------

    • I can't use an HTML guide in my emulator. No web browser for it. And I don't know what browser might still have a version that will run under OS 7.5.5. Though I should be upgrading to OS 8 soon. Friend of mine sent me a copy via snail mail, which should get to me by Monday at the latest. So anyone know what browser I would need?

      CaptJosh

    • Try Internet Explorer in Windows. 🙂

      ------------------

    • Why do that when I've already opened the file in question in MS Word? In any case, I need the reference manual available to me while I'm running the emulator, and it doesn't work in windowed mode. Or at least not for long. The emulated processor just freezes, as near as I can tell.

Ah, so that's your problem. I guess we've been assuming your emulator worked much the same way as a PC emulator for Macintosh would, and allowed you to use both systems at the same time. If you need to have the file open in the emulator, then (url="http://"http://www.icab.de/")iCab(/url) might be the best browser for opening the HTML version on an old-fashioned emulated Mac, as it doesn't have much in the way of system requirements.

    • Well, I may be able to get a regular browser soon. A friend is sending me his old copy of OS 8 and that will take care of many of my problems. Once I have it, I can update to OS 8.1 and then there's a significant amount of software I can get and use that I couldn't before, including EVN. Which kinda was the point of getting the Emulator in the first place. I'm tired of waiting for the Windows port of EVN and someone hinted to me in December that I'd be fortunate to see EVN for Windows by the end of March.

Printing a hard copy would pretty much solve that emulator problem.
