    • Looking for a Novatools tutor

      I am a complete newb to Novatools and plug-making, and have absolutely no graphics skills. I need someone to show me the ropes of Novatools in detail, so that I can get started on my plugin (a TC, totally top-secret 😉 )

      I tried teaching myself how to use Novatools, but I'm clueless. Will someone help me?

      I would recommend the Nova Bible, as well as experimenting with tiny plugs (my first personal plugin changed the max number of CPL's to 5. My second (unfinished) makes alternatives to the tunneling organ and multijump, only available to those who don't get the tech bubble. It also creates an Owen Greylock përs, although I still can't figure out how to confine him to Tichel. Don't mess with him....My third makes some fun gravity changes to Sol -Earth and Jupiter pull, Mars and Europa push.). Just fool around, see how effects in various plugs are done, etc.

      Open up the Nova Data/Graphics/Ships and play around. Make a new plug and then modify the existing stuff. When you get better, try adding a ship. NovaTools doesn't require a lot of skill, it just demands that you keep track of stuff and constantly error check.

      I'd also recommend looking at other people's plugins to see how they did things. Walk through a small one with the Bible and see if you can follow the changes they made.

      A good place to start is probably with systems and planets or weapons and outfits. If you make changes to those you can usually see them straight away, and they're fairly easy to understand. Save worrying about missions and control bits and crons and require/contribute fields until you have a better grasp of the basics.

      And if you don't understand anything, post to the webboard - there are lots of smart people who'll help you out!

      Sometimes I go in and spellcheck all the dëscs in a plug. Sometimes I will rewrite a bad dësc. (example: Plugpack v(most recent version). No offense, but some of those descriptions are really hard to read. I had to correct the spelling of technology a billion times, and I completely rewrote the SF light cannon dësc.)

      Hehe. That sounds strikingly familiar to a plug I made right after Nova was released for the first time. That and diable-only point-defence lightning beams.
